45------60-------55
« on: November 04, 2009, 07:16:09 PM »
Bigfoot called yesterday and said his motor had been rebuilt and he wanted to take me fishing today as well as put a "little" time on his motor.

Well it was 45° this morning when we hit the water.  We started out at 3000 rmps and it wasn't bad but he did a fast break-in.  It was no time till we were bouncing from 3500-4500 and once in a while 5000 rps.  I really wasn't dressed for that kind of speed (19' Bass Cat/200 Merc.).

His idea of a little time on the motor was to go for a 60 mile ride.  He has a single console boat and I thought I would fall out of the boat shaking before that little ride was over.

Finally we got back to the launch area and he drove 6 more miles up the river to fish.  We fished about 5 hours and wound up with 51 white bass, 2 lmb, and 2 smb.

After I quit shaking I had a really good day. ;D

60 miles......in the cold !  Don't think I could handle that.  Congrats on the catchin' though!  Do you think your shivering put just the right twitch on the lure, lol ?  :)

Well. Ya got good and refreshed did ya? Sounds like overall good fishin.  I've never had to break one in and I can say it would test my patience.

Greg no I don't.  When I was shaking I couldn't hold the rod. :D

Steve it was a cool ride but I should have known he would go too far and too fast.  I once fished a tournament with him and we ran almost 130 miles to and from our spot where we had located fish.

He wasn't very patient.  When I do a break-in I use a stop watch and carefully do 10 minute segments of rpm variation taking 10 hours before wot.  He would do about 10 minutes in the top of what ever range he was working and when he dropped rpms it would be for 1-2 minutes.  Then, here we go again. :D

Woh.

The first and only time I ever fished from a bass boat my buddy was cruising at about 50 mph.

I thought I was impervious with my superwindproof jacket and three layers of clothes, but none of my clothing was a match for the 20 degree weather.

The bitter cold went through me as if I were where a pair of shorts and a hawaiian print shirt. I was so frozen I actually went through the hurling motions.

It looks like you guys were quite productive.  8)

GMAN I had underarmour with lined jeans on the bottom, under armour, a henley, hooded sweatshirt, hooded insulated jacket on the top.  I needed my face mask and my heavy bibs and heavy coat for that little ride. :o

I know the feeling, JM! I went to a club tournament a long time ago where I was not prepared for the 21* weather.  We went 36 miles one way and I had not much more than Walls work coveralls and hooded sweat jacket on. That was miserable!! bRRR. Came in third place with three chunky LM that day though!

I once rode 60 miles in 28 degree weather one way.  The guy I fished with told me the Thursday night before the tournament, that if I didn't have a helmet, I might want to buy one.  We'll I bought one and it was the best $75.00 I ever spent, except for one night in Dallas, ;D Well!!! we won't talk about that.  Anyway he forgot his and all he had was a toboggan, and we had to stop 3 times to let his brain thaw out, you know like when you eat ice cream to fast.  If he had ask I probably would have gave him mine, and I would have laid down in the boat, but he didn't ask and I wasn't offering.  Really though if you fish in cold weather, and your going to run aways, you need to buy a helmet.  I will have mine on Saturday morning wheather we run 1 mile or 100 miles.

As Jack will testify I am always prepared for cold weather. The day we went out the temp was 46*; but I had a hooded jacket, sock hat, gloves, long johns, and a rain suit to protect me from the cold. They never once got cold. I LEFT THEM IN MY TRUCK PARKED AT HIS HOUSE! ::)

Yessirree! Those fresh air rides can be something else. A few years back at a March TX on LOZ they were conducting a Sat. TX and a different one on Sun. We were entered in the Sun. TX. We prefished on Fri and it was miserably cold, nerver got above the very low 30's. I was never so happy to get to the motel room and the hot shower in all my life. Early Sat.morn. I woke up and looked out the window. The snow was coming down ... sideways! We were planning on going out for a bit of prefishing but because of the weather we were in no big hurry. I woke my partner up and suggested that since it was still dark we should head over and get some coffee and doughnuts and drive down to the ramp and watch the TX takeoff. When we got to the ramp there were guys up in the parking lot working on their outboards, there were guys out there bobbing around sweeping snow off there deck with brooms. (Everybody carries a broom in their rod rack ,right?). There was also several guys trying to lift a boat back onto the trailer at the waters edge that was frozen to the bunks and when it cracked loose it slid completely off the trailer onto the ramp.( You do keep the front of your boat attached to the trailer until it is in the lake don't you?)

Sun. Morn for our TX it was still snowing and 19 degrees. We drove 36 miles one way. That was the last time I ever got in a bassboat when the temps were under 45 without a helmet. It was like someone else said..... the best $75 I ever spent.
