A REALLY Good Day
« on: June 26, 2010, 03:09:16 AM »
I took a mental health day off yesterday and did what any fisherman would do when he is need of some rest; I went fishing. It took me a bit to figure out what was going on but I finally got set on pitching a 1/4oz. jig to the outside edge of the shoreline surface weeds.
I launched at sunrise and it was cold; well 68* felt kind of cold compared to what we have been having! I tried all of my regular 8’ to 10’ ledges without a single bite; I then moved out to 12’ to 15’ foot ledges and still nothing. I switched to a smaller jig and as I was working down an arm of the lake I made an errant cast; the sun was shinning brightly by this time and I cast closer to shore than I intended. Bam, first bass, 1 ½ pounds. As I worked my way down this arm I kept catching bass. I turned and started back out this arm and kept catching bass, with 2 to 2 ½ pounds being average. I tried moving out deeper and again hauled water. I then went back into another arm where I know the water never gets more than 12’ deep. At the back of this arm I caught seven bass; two of which weighed 3.7 and 3.4 pounds and were caught within 5 cast of each other. By this time (11:30am) I had boated 17 bass so I decided to go for 20. I went back to the main lake area but stayed with the shoreline fishing routine. I was fishing shallow water that went from bank to 15’ deep in less than 20’ distance. Most of my fish came in 5’ to 7’ of water. At 12 noon I was lashing down the boat., I caught my 20.
I was kind of surprised by where I caught these fish because the sky was clear with bright sun shine and the water temps were in the 86 to 87* range. I was swimming the small purple jig back out over the tops of submerged weeds. My mindset for the conditions was to fish deep but I spoke with another jig fisherman and he had only caught 3 small bass all morning while fishing deeper water. When I left he had turned around!
I’m heading back this morning but I plan on being home around 10am. The forecast is for 98* and that is just too hot for this old man!

Great going hoppy.  Nice to get on a pattern and catch some old linesides where you didn't expect them to be.

That is the bad thing about those slimy dudes, they ain't tied up and can go wherever they want to go and we have to play hide and seek with them. ;D

Good job Scott! I wish I had your luck today at my tournament. Only caught one bass and it weighed 2.17#.  The winning team had over 8 pounds. Big fish was almost six. The weather was nice most of the day. It wasn't until the last couple of hours that it got really hot. We have one more tournament in this USA Bassin' circuit. It will be 17th of July.

Nice job and great report! I haven't had a 20 fish day in a very long time. Hope your luck rubs off on some of us here.  ;D

I went back to the same lake the next day IB and I caught 11 small ones in 4 ½ hours. Since the weather has cooled a bit and being that we have a holiday weekend before us I am going to take an extra day (Friday) and try this pattern again.
I am going to try some ledge fishing this weekend also. Everything I read suggest that the biggest of the bunch move offshore in the summer. Being that this is a strip pit lake there is plenty of deep water. I am quickly becoming a jig freak but I might even try a (GASP) crankbait!
I had a friend that went to Clarksville, In. Bass Pro this past weekend and I had him pick me up some XPS fluorocarbon. So deep fishing, crankbaiting, and fluorocarbon line all in the same weekend; boom or bust! ::)

Good luck this weekend Scott. Watch out for those pesky sea dooers and other idiots on the water.
