Alabama in the winter?
« on: October 26, 2009, 08:39:17 AM »
I may get a week or so to get away this winter and am looking at some warmer options.  I am looking for a place only one day's travel from my house in case I would have to make an emergency trip home (M-I-L's health).

What is the weather like im Alabama in Jan. and Feb.?

Where are some nice campgrounds with water/elect sites?

I would not haul the boat so where could I find decent bank fishing?

What might I be able to catch?

Theres one bad thing about Alabama in the winter, you never know what it will be and we get such huge weather swings.   Might be 20° on days of those months but then again it might be 60°.

Avg high for my area in those months is around 56°, avg lows around 33°.

I dont know of anywhere that has plentiful bank fishing that would be any good but I am sure there are some camps with a little.

Best bets I would think would be on the TN river system (Pickwick, Wilson, Guntersville), the Coosa (Logan Martin, Lay, Mitchell, Jordan), Lake Martin, and also Eufaula.

Eufaula is the furthest south so that might be the warmest area.   Tom Mann has a museum there that might be worth visiting and there is Lake Point State park http://www.alapark.com/LakePointResort/ .  I have never been to either.

Of course the TN river lakes will be much closer to you and I am sure there are lots of nice parks there too.

TN river lakes you can catch smallmouth, but any further south you will be mostly LM and spots.

I am sure a lot of the other guys will have some better suggestions.  I dont get out that much :(

If you are considering Alabamer, here's a list or two to look at.

Look at the ones mentioned and Lake Martin and Wind Creek. I'll check back...gotta go!
