Finally got out again
« on: August 18, 2010, 07:56:01 AM »
and fished for a few hrs.  It was extremely slow.  I did manage a few on a Big M crankbait and my buddy caught a few on a shaky head.  All dinks.  It was real tough to say the least.  There must have been a shad spawn recently because there were probably a 100 balls of them all over the lake.

Is it a little late in the season for a shad spawn? I didn't know shads spawn this late in summer....lol

G the biologist for Stockton told me that they begin spawning in late April and do it off and on until sometime in July.  So they could be itty bitty babies.

We fished the Pom today and saw lots of shad when we went up the river.   We saw one school of gar that averaged over 3' in length.   They were up in about a 2 acre spot feeding on shad.

Sat at our tounament we saw the same thing. We went into one creek and saw 100's of shad balls all through the creek. They were in the middle of the creek, on the bank, and in the grass. I don't know what was going on but they were everywhere from 10 feet to 2 feet.

Shad(s) spawn in the shallows from spring through late spring/early summer until the water temp reaches 75* or so, which means they're done.

.....(shad)Hatchlings feeding on the planktons is my guess.

Yeah most of these were about 2" long.  I wish I would had brought my cast net.  I would have replanted them in a pond.

G given your location, I'm guessing that you only have gizzard shad since they can't live in Stockton or Pomme.  A 2" shad is prolly several months old.

When you have a few days on your hands with nothing to do, here is some reading for you.  http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov/wdb/pub/hsi/hsi-112.pdf

Your probably right.  I'll catch some next time I'm there if they are still on the surface and get a pic of them.
