Fishing again!
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:56:23 AM »
Well it’s been dang near three weeks since the tin rig saw any water; from the bottom that is. We had our annual one week shutdown which was followed by some out of town company so I ain’t seen the lakes in a while. That’s all gona change this weekend.
We had a weak front move through so the temps will “only” be around 88*, but more importantly the humidity will be more tolerable! I use to be a bit more concerned about the wind coming from the North or the East but after the successes I have had in the weeks past I am looking forward to a good day. The wind will be from the Northeast.
I’ve got the camera batteries charged, the swim jigs tied on, and a couple of heavy offerings ready to serve up to the grass bass. Wish me luck.

Good luck to you hoppy.  Red and I are heading down to Stockton this morning if the weather permits.  We are going to try to locate some specs on the side image.  I done a bunch of research and hope I am ready to be able to tell them when I see them.  Maybe even catch a few.

Dang Jigman I need to head over your way and see that new toy; I mean tool! I don’t see me ever having one as it would cost more than my boat.
I only caught 8 yesterday; all between 2 and 2.5 lbs. and not a one of them on the swim jig. All came from jigging vertically.
I did find something a little weird yesterday and I am hopeful that some of you might understand what it was. I was back in an arm that I have fished many time before but this time I noticed a bunch of bubbles surfacing in this one small spot. Of course bubbles play heck with a depth finder but I did notice that there was a small depression around this area. I chunked a black/blue jig at the bubbles and got a hit immediately. Five cast in a row produced five fish. I moved around the arm without a bite so I went back to the bubbles and hooked three more. The last fish was the largest but he broke off right at the boat. I need to check my line more often.
The one thing I didn’t think of diong was check the water temps right at the spot. I have heard of natural springs in this lake and I may have found one. Funny I have never noticed it before?

My best guess is that you found a spring because I wouldn't think a bunch of fish would be hanging around rotting cover that was giving up a bunch of metane.

You need to get back there and check out that water temp.  It just may be a spring.   You might even get WW to go down and look to see what is there (He is an old Navy man, isn't he.).

Don't you just love it when you stumble onto something completely out of the ordinary that saves the day. ;)

BTW:  The toy showed a bunch of stuff and frustrated me cause they wouldn't bite for me.

Although I have caught fish around methane gas bubbles, looks like you've found yourself a spring, Scott. Congrats on the 8!

Jig Man I saw the picture you posted. Sure looks like they were feeding!

WW, Nope it’s Blue Grass again. Haven’t done Audubon yet this year.

Buzz I will check it out and see if it holds up. I heading out to a different pit (in the same FWA) that I have only fished twice before. You have to travel about a mile on a gravel road and most of the high dollar boat guys won’t go there.  All three of the main lakes are connected by underground pipes so they are basically the same. With these lakes being located so close to Evansville In. they are generally packed on Sunday. I’m just trying to side step the crowds.

Since you asked; It turned out to be a weird day. The wind was higher than forecast, the cloud cover hung in until late afternoon, and this lake ain’t like all the others! There were a total of three boats on this lake.
The water temps had dropped from 87* on Friday to 84* by Sunday with a North wind. They had a lot of very localized rain. I found some fish on bait, some on rocks, and some on what few weeds I could find. I boated six but lost at least twice that many more as short strikers. Spinnerbaits and swim jigs were the ticket but the wind was blowing into the only appreciable weed flat I could find on the lake and made boat handling tough
For some strange reason all three of us decided to call it quits at the same time so we all met at the boat ramp. The first guy in said he caught six with the largest going around an estimated 8lbs! (no scale) Of my six the largest was 3.5lbs, and the third guy said he caught a catfish and one small crappie.
This lake is a lot different than it’s sister lakes. A lot more rock, some wooded areas (small stumps), and some really small, shallow pockets. It sure isn’t wind friendly; getting into the wooded area requires one to lift the t-motor so that it is barely touching the water and skim in. On the other side of this shallow area it drops back to 30’ deep. The big boat guys can’t get to these spots. I lost some paint on the bottom of my tin rig!
Looks like I will be working this weekend (Saturday at least) so fishing will be on hold for another week. ::)
