Fishing Nightmare
« on: June 01, 2010, 03:09:04 AM »
3 day weekend my big old patoot! I had to work 7&½ hours Saturday repairing some cooling towers at work. Sunday the wife had plans for me. That left Monday, Hurray!
I hook the boat up Saturday night so I can head out early the next morning. 5:30am I heading out the drive when I notice I have no trailer lights. What the heck? I check the plug but find nothing. It’s daylight, I’m going and hope I don’t see a cop.

I get to the lake by 6am, it’s overcast and looking like rain but, I am the only boat there. Too cool! I launch and start arranging my rods. I notice a commotion over in the corner of some weeds so I chunk a black Spro frog. Couple of twitches and bam! I reel up the slack, feel the fish and set the hook; NUTHIN! My frog comes bobbing back up to the surface and I notice that I now have a nice little 30# Power Pro half hitch around my reel handle. I start digging it out and what happens ; you guessed it the fish hit my frog again! Now I have a tight half hitch on my handle. I dig around in my tackle bag to find my reel repair screwdriver and get the line free of my reel. I now reel in 20 pounds of weeds and no fish!

I move around the lake casting  the frog, a spinner bait, and a jig. Finally I hook one on the spinner bait so I don’t get skunked. 1&½ pounds is better than nothing. I switch back over to the frog and bam! This is a good’en. I fight the fish to the side of the boat; looks to be 3&½ to 4 pounds, but just as I get him to the boat he spit’s the frog. DANG! I keep fishing the frog and miss another good one that hit right at the boat. DANG!

The sun starts coming out so the frog action stops. I motor around the lake a bit but don’t see any signs of fish or bait anywhere. I tie on a Black/Blue 1/2oz jig and start hitting the weedline. About the fourth cast, as I am shaking the jig on down in the weeds, BAM I get a good hit! I rare back to set the hook and hear a dreaded noise. It’s hard to describe just what a bait caster sounds like when you try to set the hook before engaging the reel, but it don’t sound good. Have you ever had to give your reel a haircut? I have!

I got it all cleaned up and retied but I have decided the fish are deep in the weeds so I grab my heavy with 50# braid, a 3/4oz black/blue jig, and a Paca Craw trailer. Go big or go home! I work my way to a point and bam! This is a goodin! I fight the fish to the boat and it looks to be in the 5# or better class. As I work him alongside the boat he jumps and spits my jig back at me. DANG!

After 7 hours of fishing I have caught one little fish and lost 4 good’ins! I load up and go home. As I am unhooking the boat I discover the ground wire on the trailer is broken. I now have 4 days to fix the trailer lights and practice my hook sets. It’s got to get better!

UMMM me thinks you don't get out enough hoppy.  Tell that woman that honey dos and stuff like that are for the winter season and this is fishing season, says the guy who just got back from taking his wife for a 5 day visit with her brother and sister-in-law. ;D

Wow,  bad deal.

I replace the whole left side wiring on my trailer this weekend.  Talk about fun.  You lucked out with a simple ground wire. ;D

I think we've all had days like that. At least you got out. And I can thank you for reminding me about my honey do list. I was planning on going out today, but reading your post triggered that mental reminder of mowing the lawn and weed whacking the whole side hill the back yard, which is a 3 hour task. Thanks! ;D

I skipped my honey dos list this weekend....I blamed it on the grass still being wet.  ;D

I spent a good portion of my weekend, in between lightning storms, with E_Basser putting brush in their pond with the lil two-man  :whew. Started fri. afternoon with the first load hauled to the dam.  We put the last of the bunches out and fished for awhile.  They were already utilizing the brush piles within 24 hrs. Caught a buunch of lit'luns and a few keeper sized ones altogether, had fun though!!

aaaaaaah!, better luck next time, Pondy!  ;D
