For us Northern Mooks: Fishing right after Ice OUT
« on: March 02, 2010, 06:19:47 PM »
Hey Fellas; a few questions
How soon after ice out do you hit your local lake?
Don't you just love when you see all those big girls crusin and not taking any thing?
What are the water temps like when they start bitting?
What baits work best for you at this time of the year, for me ti's jerk baits, both wooden and soft plastic.

As soon as i can(Can't fish for Bass though till April).Matter of fact I'm going scouting for open waters this weekend.

Yup....Because i know sooner or later they gotta eat.

48-54...This was according to a buddy of mine who happened to be in the same place i was.

What works best(heck if i know) but i know this much,I'm a tube snob....I'll throw a tube bait till my arms fall off(figuratively speaking).I do really well in the early spring ice out with them.Very deadly in the rivers i fish.
Magic lures don't exist.

2011 count:
Small mouth Bass:62
Largemouth Bass:23

I typically wont fish 33-39 deg water.   Where you really notice a pick up is about 42-44 degrees  Jerkbaits, small jigs, and tubes are some of my favorites to throw.  Typically sunny main lake points in mid day is best for me.   Sometimes even shallow structure.

One thing I will not fish is muddy cold water.  It is a waste of my time.

We had ice on my ponds for the first time in 13 years!
As soon as it was gone, I started throwing the basics.
Sometimes the fish will chase bait. Start with a lipless
crankbait. Otherwise, 3/4 oz GMAN Mop jig/ Rage Tail
Lobster.

Catchin' is more fun than fishin'.
