Just wont hit the
« on: April 28, 2006, 01:01:51 PM »
spinnerbait.  I can throw a spinnerbait past a bush or log like usualy, nothing.  Pick up the crankbait and throw it in the exact same spot and pow fish.  They just wont touch it.  Dont have a clue on this one either.  I've never run into this before.  Typicaly in that situation it doesnt matter whether its a crank, spinnerbait, the fish will hit it when they are on a shad bite.

try running the spinnerbait into the log. the the change in direction is sometimes what u need to trigger a strike. u might get hung up a little more but spinnerbaits are pretty weedless.

Usually, when bass get shy about striking a spinnerbait, it has to do with the profile size of the lure itself, and that relates to number of blades on the spinner and size of the blades on the spinner. It sounds like you are fishing a spinner that has worked for you in an area previously, and you've had success on it before, but you are just not getting the fish to react positively to it. My only other thoughts would be if you are not putting a bit of scent on the spinner skirt, you might try doing that, Yamamoto Megastrike, Carolina Lunker Sauce, or CB's Hawgsauce. If you are already using a scent, maybe you just need to go up or down a size on the blades or blade you have been using, keeping the color of the blades the same as before just trying a different size.
One things for sure, American Anglers Fishing Forum is Awesome! and someone may post something that will make the difference for you and get the spinner working again.

I will give those suggestions a shot.

I will jump to a 1/2 with a little bigger blade.  I've been throwing a 3/8 because the size of the shad are fairly small in the lake.  So changing it up to the 1/2 might fix my whole problem.  Plus it'll go a little deeper.

But Gman, think about it, does it really matter? Seeing as you figured them out anyway ;)

And that may be all the fish are wanting, a bit bigger size and a bit deeper in the water, to get you up and going again. Like I said, I know you been using something that's worked before, and you know more about it than I do, for sure, so I figured you were already onto what you might do to get it working again. Just figured you were running it by us to reinforce what you already had thought about doing. Go Get'em! I had a decent couple days fishing this week, caught eight in two days, a couple in the two pound range, and had to use a variety of lures and presentations to get that! T-Rigged lizard, senko weightless, and senko weighted, in cover, on the edge of cover, and out a bit from cover. I'm thinking these changing frontal conditions all over the country have the fish acting diferent every few hours, from tight to cover to roaming around during the course of the day. Tight Lines To You!

G, ain?t sure if this applies but  I generally drag a crank a bit slower than a spinner so maybe speed of your retrieve????
I had a day last year when I couldn?t get a bite on a spinner bait so as I was reeling it in real fast to change rods I got hit. Tried the same bait again but reeling really fast and caught several from the same area I had just come through. Go figure?
