KVD
« on: April 05, 2011, 04:32:02 AM »
I don’t know how many of you guys read Bass Times but there was an interesting article by Dave Precth in the April issue. In that article he was discussing how KVD beat out the other competitors even though they were using the same or very much alike baits. He made the argument that it was the way that the bait was fished rather than the bait itself. He states that this is what makes KVD so dominate. I tend to agree but with one side note; He didn’t mention the fact that if KVD’s lure hung up he would break it off rather than retrieve it. That way he never “ran over” his fish.
If you have unlimited sponsors dollars and an unlimited supply of lures being flown in to you I would think that all of us would do better than we generally do. I don’t think about disturbing my fish when I hang up; I think about getting my lure back! With the cost of baits today I go after my lures.
Your thoughts?

I can fully accept that theory Scott.  Fishing mostly clear water that has no vegetation and little to no other cover, I haven't gone after anything except jerk baits in years.  One of the reasons I make my own baits is to keep the cost down and not feel like I have to retrieve that jig or spinnerbait.

I have been with guys a lot of times and we have been on fish only to have them go after a bait or not pay attention to boat control and get the boat into the fish and spook them off.  That is another reason for using long rods, so the boat can be kept well away from the fish.

Add the skill set found in a guy like KVD and that is just one more edge he has if the other guys are going in on the fish.

I 100% believe KVD has a whole different fishing technique. Ever watch his videos? The man fishes fast, hard and purely reaction bite.Honestly I don't know how he does it.I'm definitely not a speed fisher like he is.He brings speed in a whole new level.

Never thought of breaking off a lure in order not to spook the fish.Makes sense to me though. I don't think I could personally afford doing that... :o. It's probably why I don't fish crankbaits or jerkbaits that often.

I do believe that presentation was key that day. In my recollection of the event, the majority of anglers went to only 2 spots, so running an gunning didn't appear to be an option. Most anglers appeared to have camped out at their spots and if they lost lures then they tied on new ones because, like you said, they run the risk of scaring away the fish.

As a recreation and local bass club angler, I hate losing expensive baits as well and would go after them, but if I have an opportunity to fish the Classic, I would absolutely part with the extra cash to make sure I had enough duplicate baits regardless of sponsership or not. Winning the Classic can change your life forever and the additional costs for lures is chump change compared to upside financial rewards you gain. JMHO

I noticed the same thing Scott. Matter-of-fact he even said why he broke them off. And like you, I can't afford to break off when I snag one. But, if I were doing really well in a tournament I think I would consider breaking off rather than going in.

For the most part i am the same way ...i'm going in!  ;D ... but in a (big)money tournament i'd mostlikely break off if i were on them. I wouldn't be on anything any way so it really wouldn't matter.  ;D  bwaaa!

Imo, KVD is the best "used water" fisherman!

I'll be reading the issue in the next few days in the surgery waiting room. I have the hardest time reading those in a timely fashion.
KVD is in a position to "do whatever it takes to catch fish". Most of us aren't. When I am fishing for fun I almost always go after my baits, even jigs. Not so much so in tourneys. Even with that said I do not fish with complete abandon like KVD can and does. He has cranked so much that I'm sure he developed retrieve intricacies that will for the most part go to the grave with him. I know my retrieve method suffers when my bait contacts something. Not so with KVD, he seeks contact. A whole different mindset that is transmitted all the way out to the crankbait.

Bass don't eat what they don't see.

I think he works so much harder than other anglers getting fish to react to a bait.   Watch his hands sometime while he's working the lure.

It's amazing how he makes his baits work for him. He design's the baits but it's how he makes them work. All the guys on the Elite Series are very good sticks and have signiture baits that they diesgned but he's by far the best at getting a bait to do exactly what he wants it to do.
