Little Lake Harris yesterday
« on: April 03, 2011, 07:41:08 AM »
I got there yesterday afternoon thinking it ought to be a good afternoon to crappie fish. I had rigged my UL up with some small braided line (8/1) and im telling you, that is a sweet casting rig now!! ...Thanks for the tip on that JigMan! Once again i fished for a few hours without a bite. I went up into a small slough after being on the main body of the lake fishing the shallow grassy areas and deeper edges (with wood), once i got half way back i had a bite on the Stinger jig that i was using on my UL rig. A small bass. Went in a little further and there was a small laydown at the mouth of a very small run-off ditch. Just off the laydown i got a bite and it was a 13" 'er bass, also on the Stinger(pulled my cord!). Fished until the sun was behind the mountain and started moving back out to the main body. Got hung up behind the boat immediatly so i turned around to get unhung. I decided then to pick up my buzzbait and toss it to the very back of the indention and caught one there that went right at 2lbs.(smacked it) The sun is hard to read behind the mountain like that so i made a dash for the ramp. They close the gate one hour after sundown there so it was getting a bit late i thought. Once i came out of the slough i fished again without any action headed for the ramp. Once i started loading up to leave(dark), i realized i never did use the Sila-flex rod that i borrowed from BaseBallFatty. I will have to make another trip, Kev!  ;D

Looks like i'll be looking for another small lake to fish for crappie in. I dont understand how this year can be absolutely void of crappie when the last two years in a row have been at least "OK". ....scratching my head on this one.

Note: On arrival there were cars, people and dogs everywhere...but i was the only fisherman out there. After i put in another boat put in.  We were the only two out there. As many bass that are in this lake, albeit small ones. I have come to the conclusion that this small lake is being hit hard by the locals(it an out of the way lake) and for the most part i can only assume that most if not all fish that are caught are kept...from speaking with other anglers that fequent the place.

There's something I really want to do - crappie fishing. I more of a newbie to that than I am to this site...  ;D

Buzzbait, you didn't catch your target specie, but it sure as heck sounds like you had a great time! Grats on your day, sounds like you had fun!  ;)

BB I feel your pain. I made a late night decision to take the boat out to Lake Nicol this morning. I only fished for about 3 or 4 hours and only caught one LM or as I called him "Larry". I had a few bump my swim jug but apparently I wasn't holding my mouth right or the cows were laying down this morning because they wouldn't take it. I switched trailers, colors, sizes and tried different reels with diffrent line on them but nothing. Oh well I guess it was better than watching it on TV.

Oh, i enjoyed myself, jf10. A bute of a day it was. Some wind but not too much. The wind even died down at the end of the day which was nice. The fish just didn't bite like i thought they would.

I've crappie fished for years off and on, but that was years ago. My f-i-l is who i crappie fished with back then. He was a crappie catch'n son of a gun. He didn't teach me anything, he didn't have to ... he just put me on them!  ;D

I really just started back fishing for them with artificial baits just two years ago and i only fish off and on for them anyway in the springtime because i know at some point they will be in the shallows and catchable.  I use jigs because i don't want to hassle with live bait fishing from the lil 2-man.

Just thinking out loud, Kev ... they also like buzzbaits in both lakes, and small spinnerbaits. I fished a swimjig off and on on the way back to the ramp yesterday.... Never got a sniff!

We need to get together and go up there sometime kev!

Good stuff Buzz. Last year around mid-June, I got out of work early and went to a small back-up res about 3 miles from work to fish for a bit. I got about half way there only to notice that my little tackle box I keep in the truck for such occasions wasn't there. I had left it at home. I foraged thru my truck and found a Spit-N-Image. Who knows how long it's been there, so I decided to take the dog for a walk. I got to the first area and crappie were busting that bait like crazy. Let me tell you, catching those lil guys was so much fun, I went home and surfed the net on how to angle for them for about 3 hours...LOL...I got the itch to target them that day!  :D

jf10, The majority of people that fish for crappie around here just use live minnows most of the time. But there are those like myself that don't want to fool with live bait so they use artificial lures of some sort.  When i crappie fish with the jigs, i still have my bass tackle with me so i can do both if the crappie aren't biting.

Over the years bass fishing i have caught crappie on various bass lures, such as shallow running crankbaits, super flukes(almost always near the surface) and spinnerbaits. You never know what those things will hit on occassion. Too,  I've caught a truckload of bream on small buzzbaits, but that's altogether a different thingy.

"Larry" was BBF's pet bass, jf10  ;D He was bassfish'n at the lake he went to.

Yes i do and have been meaning to gve them a try on that lake, Pond. I got a pack of them for Christmas but i haven't opened them yet. Those are indeed one of the lures i was going to use there this year.

(1) 2" curltail grubs w/flk
(2) (JigMan's) Stingers
(3) Storm wild-eye shad

These three were the ones i was going to concentrate on using this year. The grubs have been a life long staple, while 2 & 3 are new adventures.

I have a couple of those, I'll have to dig out my UL gear and try that. Thanks for sharing, grimlin.  :)
