missed a big one
« on: April 30, 2006, 08:22:32 PM »
i went to lake seed friday to fish saturday and sunday. on saturday i caught a 2 pound 4 ouncer on a DT 6. i didnt get another bite but had a few follow it to the boat, until i casted the DT 6 out and it hit a limb and i got backlash. while i was fixing the backlash a fish sucked something under the water. i grabbed my other rod with a  spinnerbait tied on and casted it out. i reeled it probaly  2 times and the fished slamed it. it bent a heavy action bionic blade over into a u. i was sitting down so i didnt get a good hookset. the fished took one big jump where it cleared the water and spit the hook out and swam away. i got a real good look at the fish and id say it was  a 7 to 8 pounder. after that i sat there in shock for about 10 minutes and gave up for the day. on sunday i caught a dink on a spinnerbait and a 1 pound 9 ouncer off a bed on a rattle trap. the bass were roaming in my cove. i saw a school of bass with two 5 pounders and several 2 to 3 pounders. including a 2 and a half pound red eye bass. they were so spooky that i couldnt catch them, even when i casted it 20 feet past them they still ran away.

Wow, still sounds like a good day out, even if some got away.  I'd like to see some of them good-sized bass swimming around here and at least have a chance at them.  Try different baits/lures in various colors and see if they'll bite again.   :)

Are you guys having some screwy back-and-forth weather like storms/wind/rain ?  Could be the weather patterns spooking them maybe.  Just guessing.

Sorry to hear the big one spit the hook back at ya like that. Them big ones know what to do to get away. Its a heart breaker no doubt but its all part of this sport we call fishing. Keep up the good work out there.

My dad always tells me "you'll remember the fish you missed, but not the ones you catch".  I do remember the biggest fish I have caught, but not all of the 3.5-5# fish.  Even though it sucks missing fish, it's better than never getting bit by them!! ;)

Were you using a trailer hook?  Last spring I had so many fish throw a spinnerbait that now I won't throw one without a trailer hook.

i didnt use a trailer hook but i did trim the skirt all the way to the bend in the hook so i didnt think there was a reason to put one on.

ouch. losing big fish hurts!!!! i lost a huge spot the other night, probably 3.5 to 4 pounds  >:(

trailer hooks can save you alot of grief, i've also lost huge fish on spinnerbaits.
