Myth’s!
« on: July 03, 2010, 03:07:24 AM »

Wind from the East; fish bite the least. BOOM! I blew that one away yesterday.
Had a strong Easterly wind, forecast for 11 but at times….well lets just say there were some hour long gust. Anyway the fishing started off slow but as the wind picked up so did the fishing. I found a few places where the wind was muddying up the water and the bass had the feed bag on. I swam a 5/16 jig right through the tops of the weed edges and the bass ate it up. Largest caught was 4.1lbs. but several in the 2 to 2 ½ lb range. The wind suddenly quit and so did the bass! Got 9 total.
The wind is to be from the South for the rest of the weekend so I’m going!
These winds may not sound like much to you guys fishing the glass rigs, but brother let me tell you it plays heck with a 15’ tin boat. I had my 46 lb thrust motor on the 2 speed and most times I was just sitting still.
I learned also that Fluorocarbon line ain’t no better at handling Muskies than mono is. For some odd reason the Indiana DNR decided to stock muskies in this lake a couple of years ago and they seem to like dark jigs. Lost two more yesterday. The game guys say they are up to 30” now and let me tell you they load a medium/heavy rod up……..for about 10 seconds!
My professional photographer (#1 backlasher) could not be with me so the pictures are of the fish on my onboard tape measure. I will try to post some up this weekend. Maybe, just maybe I can catch something a little bigger?

OK MYTH BUSTER!!  Watch out for this weekend because when "the wind is out of the south, it blows the bait right into the fish's mouth".    You may not want to bust that one.  ;D ;D

Good catchin' Scott.

BTW:  When the wind is out of the north, "don't go forth".   That is some of the best winter crappie conditions that we find.

Didn’t read bout ya Buzz so I guess you did OK. I’m all letric; hate gas. I can mess with letricity till next week but gas scares the P wadden outa me.
Pro of the site? That should scare all of us! Yesterday, South wind, turned out to be really tough. The wind was almost calm and the fish were hiding. I did manage a few in the weeds but it was really bad. Maybe Monday it will be better.
I was trying to set my camera up where I could take pictures of myself holding my fish (like J4F does) and some bumble fingered idiot………well there ain’t none left! Came up with some message….files empty, like your head! ::)

The funny thing is, we're all electric too, Pondhopper. I accidently bought a "$mart" version of a hot water heater in the rush of things yesterday, which in the long run, I may regret in$talling thi$ thing come time to buy replacement part$.  The 'far and explosion part would have been me sweat'n in all the joints had something gone awry. (In the utility room with a bunch of other stuff that might go boom!)  ;D I used momma's pizza pie pan as a heat sheild up against  the wall (hehehe). ::knup

The Pro .....you seem to be the catchingest one of the bunch right now was all i was say'n. And you can't deny that niether!  ;D

Good fishing to you tomorrow if you go.

Right on, Pond. Looks like you dispeled another myth, about fc being better than mono for toothy creatures. I never believed that for one nano-second. IMHO, the only thing that would truly stand up would be a wire type leader.

A “Smart” water heater Buzz? Don’t recall ever seeing one of dem. I work with a lot of “smart” controllers and I have made many a phone call to the design engineers of these products. I guess mines pretty smart; when the water gets cold it heats it back up. The pizza pan sounds like a great heat shield. I trust you didn’t tell on yourself?
IB my DNR buddy suggested the same thing but I’m not sure I want to go there. Seems like a wire leader would really hinder the action of my jigs? If I ever do target them I know to use darker colored jigs.

Yessir, a smart design. It has a control board on top that controls everything(no thermostats like the old school way). It even has it's own diagnostic system. If it faults, the LED blinks x amount of times to indicate the problem. I'm going to look up the board today sometime to see what kind of impact it will have on my wallet at some point  :bite .

Bass sometimes are alot like muskies, fish of a thousand casts! :'(

Well Buzz if it’s anything like the controllers I work with they will “UPDATE” it every three years; and of course the price will go up to reflect the “improvements”!

I happen to look at the numbers on the circuit board and jotted all the info down before I hooked it up just in case it wasn't readable upon replacement(add smoke and fire/arcing mental image here  ;D). It appears (on-line parts sites) that it's gone through a revision or two already. It will probably be completely  "obsolete" by the time I actually obtain a spare.

Did you get to go today?

I'm actually with you on not going with the steel leader and would sooner risk the loss of fish when their teeth challenge my line. The steel leader guarantees no breakage (andtherefore a greater chance of landing the fish if that is the goal) but it IMHO makes it no longer a fair fight.
