Need Help with Buzzbaits
« on: June 04, 2011, 12:12:03 PM »
I don't know what it is, but I can't get any fish on a buzzbait anymore. It used to be a great producing lure for me, but I think in the last 3 years I had 4 strikes on it. I switch to dog walkers or poppers and I'm able to get more than my share of strikes. Buzzbaits...nada.

I'm not sure if it's a color issue or retrieve issue. I rule out location because after I throw a buzzbait with zero results, I follow up with a popper or dog walker and I get results.

The topwater's I use are mostly white for clear days and darker colored ones for low light days.

The predominate forage is sunfish (pumpkinseed and bluegill), perch and crappie. Throw in some golden shiners on some waters.

I'm scrapping my all whites buzzbaits and I just made up a buzzbait with a watermelon candy skirt (about 30 strands) over pearl (about 10 strands). I'm thinking about adding a 3" single tail grub for added action at the tail and giving that a whirl.

Any ideas guys? I'm going through buzzbait withdrawals and need a fix...LOL

Yeah, me either, Jig. But, if you look at it as if lures are tools, then were using pliers to do a wrench' job and expecting it to work as well as an air ratchet. You may try bighter colors or black as far as the buzzbaits go, but if your picking up fish on something else then your doing what your suppose to do, using the correct tool for the job.

 ;D sounded good didn't it.

Don't scrap them, modify them! Change colors(paint), change skirt styles/colors. Remove the skirt all together and add a flike/swimbait.

I reel the buzzbaits moderately fast, then vary the retrieve to see if it makes a difference and i work with that. But for the most part, i fish them as slow as i can make them go. Shoot, i have added floating worm segments to the hook and wire frame so i could go even slower.

If the poppers are working then it might be an indication they want something a little more subtle. Ya might try using a tiny buzzbait, which I hate to throw BTW.

Bass don't eat what they don't see.

Jig they haven't done me any good for the last 2 years.  3 years ago I caught a bunch on them but even with high water and fish in the bushes they won't hit a buzz for me this year.  Neither will they take my jigs much so I have been relegated to senkos and tubes but that ain't a bad thing either.

Oh wow, I thought I was the only one with the buzzbait virus!...LOL

Well I did change the skirt out already, and after reading all your responses, (thank you very much, they were all very helpful), I came up with a possible solution.

I fish spinnerbaits a lot and most of my success rate is with a gold blade. I haven't had much, if any, success with nickel blades. I'm going to paint the aluminum blade on my buzzbait to take some flash out of it.

I do believe Get is right, so I'll also bend the tab on the prop out a bit which rubs against the rivet which will create less surface contact area, lessening the sqeal from it. Hopefully I'll be able to get out and see how it performs later in the week.

Thank you all for your replies, they were very informative and helpful. We'll see if these modifications work.  :)

Jig, one of the things to look at is the barometric pressure(not sure how your numbers run on avg. in your immediate area??).  I am wondering if we all still consider this factor since we're all buzzbait addicts and chunk them regardless of conditions.  (Here) 30.01 to 30.04 seems to be the pivot point(actually about 29.96). One would want it lower than 30 to have a better chance of being successful with them. If there is roughly a .04 change in 1 hour(below 30) then your chances of success just jumped up a notch. Please understand, this may only be one additional fish. Imo, lower is better, but if it's too low you might not reeeally want to be out there(tornadoes, hurricanes, severe weather)!

We went to the river here one weekend day several years back working the approaching front prefishing for a tournament. We flat knew severe weather was coming and had a schedule of places to hit and be back home safely by such and such time. Well, guess what!?...we didn't quite make it. Raining all morning, Fish went to biting really good(one right after the other) It stopped raining all of a sudden and when i pulled my rainsuit hood back off my head i looked up at the the green, blue, grey sky and saw clouds being pulled to the center...center of what!? I followed where it was all meeting together toward the ground back in the trees and there it was, a funnel cloud. As my eyes met the ground at the back of the creek the water was being sucked out of the creek. It was right there! We both saw it at the same time, dropped what we had right there on the spot, cranked up and ran out of the creek, with trees falling behind us. Once we hit the river run we headed down stream. Trees and deris going everywhere! It appeared to be the better angle to take since you are suppose to go away from them at a right angle. Luckily immediately coming out of the creek there is a high red clay bank we rode the soft spot on til the next bend in the river ...It was not fun at all and luckily we were not killed that day. It took us 6 hrs. to get back home which was normally a 25 minute trip. The tornado went through the small town we had to go through to get home. After that, i pretty much became a "fair weather fisherman" for a long time!  Avoiding severe weather for sure nowdays but go when i can. btw, i have taken a few chances since then. One was fishing a qualifier at the end of a hurricane and another storm system at the beginning of this year. Anyway, barometric pressure does matter in my opinion.  ;D

First of all Buzz, you took a heck of a chance there. One heck of a story to tell for sure, but I'm glad you don't take chances like that anymore. I'd rather have you posting on this forum than reading a thread from a member posting an obituary about you... ;)

As far as the Barometric pressure, I've read and put to test the theories that you need to fish the stable to falling pressure (front coming in) which makes sense because the wind picks up churning the water, causing the zooplankton (sp??) to rise in the water column and baitfish coming in to feed with bass following for their feed.

I've also read about fishing the pivot, where the rising pressure raises the zooplankton and the same results happen. I've goten mixed results on both occasions, but I still make sure I try and fish those 2 occurances. Just like I would fish a high tide in salt water, again, mixed results.

Now back to your story, please stay safe my friend!

Same here Jigfishn.  I havent had much success on them in 3-5 yrs.  I keep building and buying and trying though.  I must be hard headed.  If I throw a chug bug out there in the same spots I'll catch fish

Not yet Buzz, but I like the idea!  ;D   TOO FUNNY!

My wife did ask me why I was rummaging thru her jewelry box...LOL

I'll be trying it today with the new skirt color and painted blade.
