Need the scoop on smallmouth
« on: May 04, 2006, 09:20:45 PM »
When it comes to smallmouth I'm not the greatest in locating them, choosing the right type of bait. What types of structure, breaks, points do they tend to migrate to? Also what lures work the best?

As you guys know I'm 99.9% sure Im going to st clair at the end of the month so I'm gathering as much intel as I can. Reading articles and all the posts I can find on smallmouth.

I wont be fishing St Clair strictly so I need a rough guideline on what to look for.

Thanks G.

I find them here mostly on deeper rocky flats and steep chunk rock banks. But I have caught them on topwaters over weedbeds in August too. My best lures for them are grubs, either 4 or 5 inch Yamamoto in watermelon red flake and 4 inch tubes in a green pumpkin/purple flake. They also hit cranks in a brown back/yellow side pattern.
Don't know if the same will hold true up north, this is way out west on Havasu.

Golby, baitfish, and crawfish are the primary food source.  At the end of the month at St. Claire you should be fishing out off the rocky points with crankbaits  (lipless), spinnerbaits, tubes, small jigs.  I will be there fishing on the 19th- 20th of May.  Keep in contact with me and I'll let you know where there biting.
HOPE ALL'S WELL IN YOUR LIVEWELL!

A goby is an invasive species about the size of a minnow. I caught one in Lake Erie once. As for smallies, I have had my best luck with jigs and tubes.
