Night fishing question
« on: July 11, 2011, 01:46:29 PM »
I hate night fishing. But, I have a couple of night fishing tournaments coming up. So my question is this; can you catch bass in the same places at night where you caught them during the day or do they move off to some other place? Oh, did I mention I hate night fishing? If any of y'all have experience in this let me know. Thank you.  :)

Carter I love night fishing except it is too darned hot for me to go right now.  I was going tonight but when I left the barn lot at the farm a while ago it was 103° and last night at dark it was still 92°.  My bilge pump isn't big enough to keep the sweat pumped out of the boat till it cools off.

With that being said, around here you can catch them on most of the baits at night that you can during the day.  I normally use big jigs with big trailers like 6" salt craws on a 3/4 to 1 oz jig or the largest tube in green pumpkin or black/neon that I have.

If I can't get a mid to deep bite I'll move shallow especially the later in the night that I stay.  When I go shallow I pull out a single or tandem spin.  If I have moon I like white if not I like black.  I'll pull into a cut and if it has shad then out comes the single spin.

Also don't overlook a swim jig, dark in the dark of the moon and light in the light of the moon.

Some folks can catch them on buzzbaits or other tops at night but around here they don't work very well.

Some type florescent line and a good black light makes it easier.

Thank you Jig Man! I know about the line but unfortunately none of mine show up in a blacklight. Mostly because I don't fish at night much and I chose line for the type of fishing I do. Maybe I should string up a couple of poles just for the night time  ::)

I had a couple of local boy’s tell me that they only fish at night when it gets hot. They said they used nothing but 10” ribbon tail worms. Hop, swim, and crawl ledges. Might be something to consider?
Good luck.

I second the 10" worms. If that's the smallest  it's OK to use something bigger. I stick with black or very dark colors. If there will be lots of slow worm, creature, or jig fishing then I for sure would go with the black light and the fluorescent line. In that case if the water is lightly stained or clear ya might as well throw some Tightlines UV 10" power worms or 6" UV Hogs under that blacklight. You can get em at Academy or Cabela's now if you have one close by. If not let me know, I've got some if you need some.
If there will be thermocline at this lake don't forget to take that into consideration.
I usually sort through my reels and select 3 or 4 that are the most open access to the spool and the simplest design for night fishing. There is not major differences but in the night I want something simple to play with. Also if you have the rear light turned on at all times you might want to consider hanging a sock over it when you are actually fishing to mute the effect a bit. It's not so blinding and doesn't attract quite as many bugs.

Bass don't eat what they don't see.

I third the 10" worms! Back when i use to fish at night we used black also. Other colors we had pretty good luck on were some shade of red, such as plum, redbug, bloodline, Red Shad. Junebug too.

As far as topwater goes i'd probably work frogs and buzzbaits in and around the grass(for LM) from the time the sun starts behind the trees til right before dark:15. If you choose to fish in total darkness that night with no black light at all, right or wrong, get as low in the boat as you can to gain as much line feel as you can fishing sub-surface baits (sitting, fishing slow, using a finger for extra detection). Note: Just make sure you move your finger out of the way upon set'n the hook!  ;D

Have fun and carry plenty of skeeter spray!

Thanks fellas! I went today so I could see the areas. I used a big ol' Rage Tail worm in green pumpkin and caught one bass on it. But then I was trying different lures to see what all might work.

You might also try a 5/8 jitterbug.  I have had very good luck with them at night.
