Power or Finesse ?
« on: July 17, 2010, 05:40:05 PM »
How do you decide ?  Do you start with one and then switch to the other? How long does it take you to make the determination ? Do you second guess the choice or have full confidence in the decision ?

I have a small club TX tomorrow on a lake which I won the club TX two years ago. Two 1/2 weeks ago the lake was 6-7 foot high. One week ago it had been lowered to 2 1/2 foot high. Today it is 1 1/2 foot high.  I have fished the lake twice in the last 10 days for about 5 hrs each time. The first time the lake was 6 foot high and I only caught one 17" fish in a spot which is dry land now. The other 5 hr. trip I drew a complete blank !  I am not on any fish.  Should I use both approaches or stick to one or the other?

I try to power early as long as the bite last, then switch to finesse.   Which pretty much around here means largemouth early, then finesse for spotted bass.

Power fishing means different things to different people.  For that matter so does finesse fishing.   So I'll have to give you my definition in order to make myself clear.

MY DEFINITIONS:

Power fishing is not really bait related but how hard you work an area while finesse fishing is using small baits along with drop shot and split shot.

So by those definitions, I only finesse fish in cold water.  This time of year I beat the water to a froth with a jig, a worm, a craw, a big tube, and a brush hog.   I change baits every 5 casts until I find something that they will hit.  In the waters I fish I set as deep as possible and make the longest casts that I can make working the bait back as deep as I can on each cast.

Now if power to you is run and gun then I'll do that for maybe an hour with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits very early in the morning.

Good Luck to you, Get!

Not sure how you've been fishng, but if you're fishing shallow and not getting bit at all, you may as well finesse or "power finesse", out a little deeper all day. Has something drastic happened to the lake to make it so tough this time??

Since the water was up above normal pool recently those fish have pulled out with the falling water mostlikely and it may take fishing out deeper, or at least at the normal pool depthes to put together some sort of a pattern for the day.

I'm mostly a finesse fisherman I guess.  I dont Power fish as to move constantly.  I focus on good spots and fish them well.  Scooting past non productive water.

Well guys, thanks for the tips and comments.  Sunday was.......  well it's over.  Only 3 fish total were caught. No one caught more than one. I threw subtle and not so subtle buzzbaits on two different rock jetty breakwaters. I tried fishing a long tapering point with a great drop into deep water where I have caught a few before . I used a football jig, a deep crank, a carolina rig, and a pop-r. I fished with the boat on the bank and with the boat out deep throwing up on the point. I c-rigged, deep cranked, football jig, and shakey headed on channel swings fishing both the bank and the channel drop itself. I fished several old docks with a tube and a 10" worm in an old marina 6-10 ' deep. I fished 10" worms, salt craws, 1/2 oz. jigs and shakey heads in isolated wood between 3 and 12' deep.

Some of these locations I visited 2 or 3 times. The water was a wee bit warm , 84 in the morning and 86 or 7 in the afternoon.

Today I was the statue.

Still had a blast though !

Fun,  thats all that matters.

Did you throw a DD22 or other deep diving crank on some main lake rock pts?  This time of the year that is my favorite in big lakes.

Well, I have 4 or 5 DD22's and a couple other brands of Deep divers but the one I was using was the Lucky Craft 3.5. I just purchased one the other day for the first time and I wanted to see how it worked. So far I liked it but was unable to find something compelling to attract me more than the DD22.  I did try it some on a channel swing/main lake with a point.

That is a technique that I have very little experience at but little by little I am growing more fond of all the time.

Any hints? How to fish em, where to fish em, when to fish em ?

Channels, swings, points, ledges, etc.  All are great places.   What works for me is finding that spot and make sure the bait is hitting and bumping the bottom.  That is when the deep divers work the best imo.  If its not bumping you typically are fishing dead water.  its basically a thump thump thump all the way back on the retrieve.

Reel as slow as you can but keep the bait on the bottom bumpin.

A Lowrance HDS8, like Jig Man's.

Myself, I would love to have one, or a Humminbird Si model!

Methinks maybe I better get to learning that thing. I'm one of those guys that tries not to fish  deep.

(Boatless for awhile now, but..)  All I have now is an old x-65 lowrinse and an in-dash flasher unit to rely on when I do go deep, and they have served me pretty good so far. When I fish away from home, fishing our clear water lakes and not-so familiar bodies, is when I tend to use them muuuch more.

I try not to go over 10' deep around here myself. But I will if I have to and of course do sometimes. Most of the time though, you can see my lure(on top).  ;D

I wish I had a HDS 8 but if I put one on my 89 it would look like a camp house with 60 inch plasma in it. I don't know why I would need one because if my outboard isn't dragging bottom I'm fishing to deep.

yall going up the NW-ish appendage or the NE-ist appendage....up the crick? I was looking at the Bing maps again the other day and looked at your listed home water and another smaller lake, I think, south and east of Perry but I forget the name of it ::) ..Perry is an interesting looking lake, from the map, but you can't tell much about the characteristics of the lake just by that. After looking at it though,  I was wondering if you ever fished those oxbow/back water looking places well up into the creek runs off the main lake. You can't really tell much about them on the maps because it won't zoom in real close.

Yall have a good trip!

P.S.-I thought about you and those UV plastics you use the other day. I read a couple short articles on UV the that day but I didn't mark them. One of them was about a "fool-a=fish" product that gave some detail about, the product itself, UV light, the color bands and depth ranges. If I can find it again I'll link it here.

Hey Buzz the NW arm is Rock creek. The only time when ya can get to those oxbow type places is when the lake is real high. There is one on the Delaware a ways up there that you can sometimes get to. It'll usually hold some fish.

Yesterday I ran into a guy that was involved with these UV baits a couple years ago. He swears up and down that he did a lot of research and nowhere could he find any proof that bass can see UV light . Now he's got my attention and I will have to do some research myself.

Got the package Steve!  Those are some really nice looking baits, and some good colors for around here too. Can't wait to try them out!

Thanks Steve!
