RX for Topwater Fish in the Weeds
« on: May 15, 2011, 10:12:11 AM »
Saturday after work, I was able to do some more topwater bank fishing again and had some really nice results. I hooked into one I knew was a quality fish, I'm guessing in the 3-4 lbs range when I saw her at the surface . When I hooked her I knew I had to get her past a wall of weeds about 1' - 2' below the surface, so I tried to skate her in fast and kept my rod tip low so she wouldn't jump. Well, she dove on me and got me in those weeds. I tried everything to get her out, but she unbuttoned on my spook jr. I was trying not to apply too much pressure while she was in there, but, well, it was too much pressure.

Any suggestions as to what I could have done differently? Fish, weeds and treble hooks is not a good recipe.

question is, would it have hit something different? If so, a single hook bait, something like the Yum money hound, a fluke, floating worm, frog bait, etc. Just anything with a single hook may have help a bit. If not, cutting the forward hook off each treble may have helped.

You're probably right Buzzbait. I had a small window of opportunity to fish, I should have switched it up....I hate that. LOL

I'd go risking the jump over risking the weeds.  My suggestion I'd try heavier line/rod.  I do also agree with buzzbait.  Those spooks in weeds will catch everything under water.

I think you're right as well GMAN. I'm so used to keeping my rod tip down, I let the wall of weeds psyche me out. A tactical error...LOL

I'll know better next time, that's for sure.

Thanks for your input guys.  :)
