This is my third season sight fishing. I will only do it for 1 or 2 outings only for educational purposes. Last Thursday I was fishing a buck bass on a bed with my jig. He was about 8 feet n front of me in about 2 FOW. I casted well beyond him until I got the jig close to the bed. I waited until he chased a gill away and put my jig right on the nest. He came back, inspected my jig and did nothing until another gill came by to chase away. He came back and inspected my jig again. I moved my jig an inch and he did nothing. I snapped the slack in my line causing the jig to roll on the lead head and he started to get excited. His pec fins were quivering and such so I snapped the slack line again. More quivering. One more snap and he decided to move my jig...6 inches off the bed and he grabbed it by the brush guard.
I put it back and the whole process started again. I finally got him excited enough where he picked the skirt of the jig up to move it. This time I reeled down and applied pressure to the lure. He then adusted his grip on it to where I could set the hook. I went to set the hook and just as I was ready to go, he dropped the jig 6 inches outside the bed again. I left him alone at that point...LOL
The thing that I learned was, I never felt any of the pick-ups. Even when he moved the jig 6 inches or so, I never saw my line really move or give me any indication that he had it in his mouth. I wonder how many times I fished a jig or soft plastic and that has happened? Very interesting indeed, like you said grimlin. It was almost like that bass knew my jig was artificial, but yet he was curious enough to stay interested in it.
