Swim Jigs
« on: December 26, 2009, 04:19:19 AM »
For Christmas my wife “allowed” me to buy another selection of jigs from the G-Man. Some that I bought were Blue Shad swim jigs in 3/8th and 1/2oz.
I need some suggestions on trailers to be used with this color swim jigs.
Don’t be shy about the suggestions as I received a $50 gift card from her eldest son. Can’t wait until her youngest son gets a good job! ;D

hoppy a lot of guys use a single tail grub like the 5" Kalin but I like the Zoom swimin chunk.

Check your mail box about next Wednesday or Thursday. ;)

NetBait™ Paca Chunk Senior is one you might give a try sometime. White or pearl

I second Buzzbaits suggestion, along with a Zoom ultravibe chunk.  Buzz and and baseballfatty can tell you how well those worked for me earlier this year.

Not being an advanced jig or trailer user, would the white or pearl color trailers work if combined with other color jigs?

for Gmans Blue Shad color I recommend the "Blue Pearl" color Paca, but white works good too.

I typically try to match the color of the trailer to the jig.

It never hurts to experiment with colors.  Last year two of my hottest ones were golden shiner jig/gray swimin chunk and red jig/white swimmin chunk.

white or pearl would work best with shad colored jigs for the most part, imo ww. But I guess it depends on the "hue" of the bait too. And don't forget contrast is best at time....well, what Jig Man said......

I will second JackJ's selection because I was in the back of the boat when he throtled me. I personally would go with the Paca Chunk or a Chigger Craw. The Chigger Craw's legs have so much action in the water that it can't be beat. Except the day I fished with Jack.

Jig Man you’ve got me standing by the front door already! ;D
Greg if I remember right you were throwing a different colored chunk than your jig the day you spanked me at Audubon. ::) We need to try some jig fishing along the rip-rap at Pee Wee. And remember that ditch we found running out from the highway? And Mauzy is filling back up and ………
I caught more fish on jigs last year than any other bait. Learning to use swim jigs seemed like the next progression.

hoppy
Swimming the big jigs is one of the simplist things I have ever done.  It is way easier to do that to swim my bucktails.  Last year the bass didn't seem to want jigs fished on the bottom on the lakes I fish so swimming or nothing was the jig ticket for me.

I tried to keep 4 or 5 setups rigged with swim jigs of various sizes and trailers.  I settled on the Zoom Swimmin Chunk because of the let action.  It looks like a swimmer with flippers on and the bass loved it last year.  I hope that they do again this year as I have a few hundred stockpiled. ;D

For the life of me I can't recall the color of the jig, but I know it was a two-colored, dark jig, and I had one of Joe's black trailers on it.  I'm wondering if that bass I caught that day has gained some weight since then?   :pray

Greg, that lake doesn’t get much fishing pressure. Mostly crappie fishermen. It is a hard lake to fish and most guys can’t stand the dark waters. I’m sure it is waiting on you for a second chance.

Jig Man, I remember a post by J4F where he talked about swimming a 1oz jig with a double trailer; I tried that for about two hours one day and like to have worn myself out. I didn’t understand, until later, that he only did this as he was leaving one area and heading to another! ::)
I like the looks of that trailer, and the Zoom ultravibe. Guess I’m gona have to buy some of every kind until I find what works for me.

I have them in 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 oz.  I find that the 1/2 oz is the one I use most.  However, I did catch a bunch of fish running the 1 oz over a long stumpy point banging it into the stumps and touching the bottom.  That was a good pattern that lasted for a couple of weeks last summer.

I didn't know there was any other type of water to fish, lol.   Looking forward to that second chance!    :)

PH,  I've always used white or black with those.  Either of those colors have produced for me.

I'm going to start working on swimming jigs this year......Honestly,I never really done it much yet.

I got the silly idea from somewhere to pair it up using half back part of a plastic buzz frog for some leg action.

Magic lures don't exist.

Most of the time you can't have too much leg action.  That is why I use the one in the pic most of the time.

I've seen Bill Lowen use a full plastic frog as a trailer.

I love the Zoom Super Ultravibe Speed Craw, chopped off just below the second set of side legs (about half of the body). Paca Craws work, too, but the Super UV seems to be the best for me in open water. For really heavy cover situations, fall back to the smaller regular-size Speed Craw for a slimmer profile.

As for color, I think that white or pearl are best for white/shad/perch colored jigs, green pumpkin for green/brown/orange jigs, and Okeechobee Craw or Black Sapphire for black jigs (according to the skirt colors). Really, though, I think that anything that gives a good action and that you have confidence in is more important than the exact color.

I fished a full practice day with Bill Lowen at Guntersville and he sure can catch'em with the swim jig. I just bought me a couple to try later this year.  ;)

Is that what they're calling a fighting frog? ( a jig/frog combo lure). I found that in a search on google the other day. Just stumble upon it llooking at frogs. I haven't found it again since  :scratch
