The world record spotted bass (WELL ALMOST)
« on: May 01, 2007, 09:10:56 PM »
I have been asked to tell the story on my spotted bass so here goes.      First of all I had not fished long enough to tell the diff. in a LM or a spotted bass so remember this through the story.  My brother inlaw asked if I wanted to go fishin' w/ him at a local lake (big pond) and of course I said I would, so off we were to this place where two bodies of water were pretty close together, We fished the bigger one for a while and I had that "gut instinct" that told me to go to the smaller of the two. Asked B.I.L (kevin) about it and he said"There aint no fish in it but go ahead." So I cast by an old wooden dock w/ a 7 1/2 tequilla shad Culprit worm and as soon as it hit the bottom......BOOM, the fight was on!! To make a long story short about the "world record" part of it, I took to fish to a guy that I heard done good work and they failed to tell me he had a younger boy skinning the fish for him. Anyway the kid didn't know what it was either so he skinned it. The taxidermest calls me,ask if I knew what I had caught and I said "A largemouth I think>?" His reply shocked me big time!! He said"Not only do you have a state record spotted bass,it's probably a world record." My reply was "What the......"  So I live now knowing that there is a world record spotted bass on my wall and I was too ignorant to know at that time but... I know the difference now by golly!!!   11.6 pound spotted bass

Well that's what I was saying about the kid that skinned it. He didn't know the difference and when I brought it in I had it in a towel all wrapped up. ;)

Congratulations on the monster spot! Even though "unrecognized", it must feel pretty good to have a mount of a fish that smashes the official record by more than a full pound! My biggest bass to date is a Shasta Lake spot....Caught in Jan/09 on a bomber crankbait, it weighed 7.11 lbs on certified scale. I think the next record spot will likely come from either Pine Flat Reservoir or Lake Shasta. There have been spots taken from Shasta that were "undocumented" but have gone 10+ lbs....

Very nice.   They have shocked up spots bigger than the worlds record on the Warrior River here, but catching them is a different story!

Just think if those were Coosa spots out there.  :bite

Buck, Is Lake Elsenor(sp?) still a canidate lake for that record spot or is it mainly largemouth these day. I've never fished any of those but I use to "check on them" from time to time. Bob Cruipi was mainly the fisherman I check on. He seemed to be a fish catching son of a gun for a long time out that way.

Nice fish for sure Buck!

And welcome to the site!

I've heard that too, that the original spots planted in the early 80's were from Lewis Smith Reservoir...From what I've researched online, Lk Shasta has perfect conditions for spots and a high rate of survival for spawn....At any rate 4-5 pounders are fairly common here, and one can catch and release 100 fish a day under the right conditions... :o
