Unseasonably Warm
« on: April 19, 2006, 09:45:55 AM »
You all probably know that here in northeast Tex. and Okla. it has been unseasonably warm for about the last week. Daytime temps. in the high 90's and overnites in the mid to low 70's. Because of this, I am approaching this weeks fishing as Post Spawn. Just thought I'd ask your opinions on this. Do you think I am right, and as soon as I hit the water should I begin looking for post spawn patterns? That is the direction in which I am leaning. Would you all do that as well? Any replies are appreciated. BTW, the high pressure ridge broke last night about eight p.m. CST, this morning it was mid-60's temp wise, and the daytime highs the next few days are forecast in the mid to high 70's. So at least I should be comfortable out there! Thanks,
Rob

I would wait till you got there and go by the water temp as far as trying to pattern.

Have the fish actually spawned yet.  Its been the same here not quite as warm but close.  The fish are just going crazy and should be spawning soon.  They are making beds right now.

102 and 101 the last two days. Mid 90's for the 2 weeks prior. In central Texas, the spawn is gone.

Its now time for nighttime fishin.

Rob,
They are still catching bedders on Alan Henry so I would guess that up where y'all are, there might be some stragglers left.

Yeah, I neglected to mention that the water temps. were in spawning range before the warm(hot) spell began. I know I dragged a few baits across some spawning beds last week, by the nature of the strike as you cannot see many beds here due to the stained water color. I feel like there might be a few late spawners, but since the full moon was last week, and with the warmer(hot) than normal air temps. I just think the big part of the spawn is done, and now I can fish for them in post spawn mode. Thanks guys, I really do appreciate your replies.
Hook'em, I will be at Canyon Lake the first of June thru Sunday the 4th of June at Potter's Creek Park in one of the screened shelters there. NAFC Texas Members meet is there at that time. Drop by if ya feel like it, if not nice to meet ya here on AAFF.

Sounds like your conditions are like ours.  I have had the best luck fishing with a crankbait pounding the bank. And fishing fast.  Most of them have been in less then 2 ft. of water.

Thanks GLMan,
I had thought that now might be a time when I get a hit on one of those Wiggle Worts I got on clearance in Feb. I also thought about the rattling crank in 1/2 and 1/4 ounce, a shad pattern or bluegill color. I also have some cranks in a dark green back, chartreuse sides, and orange or red belly.
Another trick I like to try is the four inch senko, Texas rigged on a 1/8 ounce tungsten weight, I cast it shallow and bring it back like an erratic crankbait retrieve, insert a rattle for sound, and either Megastrike or Carolina Lunker Sauce(menhadin shad). Of course, I also use senkos weightless(straight and wacky rigged), too. Just got to see what the conditions are like when I get out.

The fish around here have been on such a feeding frenzy they wont waste there time on little stuff.  My best producers have been beavits, or hoo daddy's, and as earlier crankbaits.  I've noticed the lure needs some bulk to it.  I've tried the ol spring lizard but it hasnt been producing like usual.  Good luck hope you catch some dandies.

Thanks,
We had some lightning and thunder and a bit of wind come thru about 3/3:30 this morning, so I am going to try cover first and see if they are tight to it like I expect.

Tight to cover was a good choice for my bassin' on thursday and friday. I fished for three hours thursday and caught three, one dink crappie(about five inches length) on a 1/4 ounce spinner off the bank, and one spotted bass about one-half pound on a senko next to a weedy area on the bank, and one largemouth pushing eight pounds in shallow water out of a weedbed about six foot in diameter next to a wooden sea wall that extends above the waterline right against the bank got her on a rainbow trout colored five inch senko texas rigged on a 1/8 ounce tungsten worm weight. She was spawned out and her belly was no longer red or her tail beat-up from the spawn.
On friday I caught six spotted bass, five you could have cut from a mold, all in the pound and a half range, and one half-pounder, all were in or near shallow heavy cover and all were caught on the rainbow trout colored senko, either texas rigged or rigged weightless.
Both days I tried some other lures and a couple different colors of senkos, but only caught the small crappie on a bait other than the rainbow trout colored senko. There are no trout in the lake, it would not support them, the rainbow trout color is just a good color, and one I am certain would be effective on sunny days as well as overcast days. It was overcast both days I fished, and overnight thursday and friday morning we had rain. In fact, on friday I had a soft steady rain for about 30 minutes while I was out fishing, and occasionally there would be wind gusts of about ten to twelve mph.
All in all I enjoyed my fishing both days.
