What bait and seasonal pattern do you need to work on
« on: October 21, 2009, 05:46:46 PM »
What bait and seasonal pattern do you need to work on?

Myself, I;m going to concentrate on a shorter string in the spring of the year and a much much longer string on my drop-shot rig at times the rest of the year. I have been wanting to play around with that for at least two years but the water clarity here has not really allowed me to utilize the short set-up for the most part (and the lack of actually going during the clearer water months ;)). I'm also going to look at using a crankbait more throughout the year with my main target being suspended fish in the warmer months.

What about yourself?

i'm with you on the shorter string.....i have caught fish flippin' and i think it's a real exciting bite, i just don't ever commit to it. i also want to learn to fish slower, at times, during the spring.... i learned that i need to do that by the a$$ kicking bob and i took at pickensville this year! :puke

on the dropshot, you ought try the skinnier string also....i been fishing 4lb test  :o but usually use 8lb....works really well, that small line is a lot tougher than ya think.

Well there are two techniques I would like to become more proficient in. One is shallow squarebills, and the other is a C-rig. I have trouble knowing how to retrieve the squarebill. Is the squarebill supposed to be slowly cranked and worked/finessed over stumps and other trash, or is it supposed to be burned back? I also don't read the water very well to decide when and where to throw a C-rig. I also get my head all crazy wondering if I should be C-rigging little centipedes or brushogs or 10" worms.

I am definitely going to spend more time learning to jig fish. This is the first year that I really concentrated on using jigs and it paid off.
For the deeper waters (suspended fish) I am going to try swim jigs and spoons.
I seem to have done ok when it was hot, still, and very sunny but let the wind blow and the fish start moving, chasing bait, and my catch rate falls to nothing.

Shorter string for me too.  Flipping the grass is what I for sure need to work on.
