I have an older model Triton TR boat with a blown-up Ficht 225 hp Evinrude motor sitting on the back of it. I have a chance of getting a motor off of a tornado damaged boat locally pretty cheap to replace my blown Ficht engine with. I've been told it's an 89 model motor/boat with an 89' 200 hp Mariner motor. What all would i have to do to change it over from a 99 Evinrude to a 89 Mariner(it being an 89 model engine i assume it is the same as a Mercury motor and can be rebuilt still if need be). My Triton also has hydraulic steering, which i would like to keep if it possible.
Rebuilding the Ficht is not an option, too many problem$ overall.

I dont see why it couldnt be done. I would say the other motor is probably cable steer so it would have to be converted. Other then that the throttle hooked up and some wiring.

Buzz, this is an interesting project to say the least. I realize you may get a good price but I am sure you know you need to verify the compression and leakdown so you really know just how good of a deal it is, or isn't. Maybe if you know the history of the boat you are already comfortable with the integrity of the motor.
With that said I would think you probably need to switch over the controls. Will these come with it ? I hope you can work out a good setup for a steal of a price. BTW, this will be a good time to make sure the transom is up to snuff also.

Well, it being a Ficht motor/set up, I'm pretty sure the Tach will have to be replaced. The Ficht System itself is intergrated into the tach by having all of its engine on/fault system lights built into it (the tach). The entire
engine
wiring harness i know will have to be changed out and modified to fit. The fuel line from the tank itself, all the way to the motor. Remove the Rude oil injection system. Adapt the ignition and trim wiring to the Mariner controls. The entire steering system will have to be replaced if it will not convert over. Does the Hot Foot cable have to be changed? Anything else?

I have a Mariner ('89 model) and was told that it was made by Mercury.

Have you looked at rebuilt newer motors. An older motor will suck gas down more then that ficht did. The 225 I have now gets better gas mileage then my old merc 135

Yes i have, Gman. I really can't afford anything newer right now. The older Mariner would have been a give away pretty much and was really the only reason i considered it(boat/motor/trailer and equipment)
but
, after thinking about it and what all would have to change, especially my hyd. steering!, i'm probably not going to put an older motor on this boat. I will have to wait until i can get that 2016 E-Tec it

Buzz, I feel ya. These sleds aint cheap to keep. Today I went to a lake that I haven't been to for 8 yrs. There is a reason why it's been so long. My boat don't like that lake. Got a small club tourney there Sunday so I figured I better go take a look around. NOT !
I did catch a fish . 1 12" crappie at 2 o'clock. What a long day. I think I got hung on every stump in the lake, same as last time. Don't even want to look at the bottom of my boat. All but one were easy on and easy off. One was on plane about 25 mph. OUCH ! The trim/tilt relay got stuck in the up position and wouldn't quit running when I let go of the switch. I had to tie the kill switch cord around it so I could make it stop long enough to investigate. I pulled the relays and switched em and suddenly everything worked fine. While I was still tied up I decided to pull my trolling motor head cover off and line up the directional arrow since it had jumped a tooth or two from banging around in the stumps. That's when the screwdriver jumped ship.
When I got on the trailer she didn't really look too much worse for the wear except for the mud I threw on the back deck trying to get over a flat.
Today I was the statue. I think I'll see if I can sweet talk Rachel into tying on a couple of crankbaits and trolling for eyes. I don't think there are any more bass in there than there were 8 yrs ago.

Maybe just maybe!? ....correction! .....I was told today that the motor on that boat is not an 89 yr. model, it is newer than that!! A 200 Magnum. My guess is it's a mid to late 90's model. I just called the guy and i'm headed over there as soon as i quit typing!

Well, it was a Mariner Magnum motor but it was not newer. It was on the boat when it was bought new in 88-89? Now, the catch is, it is on an old BassCat. Looks rough (especially after going through a tornado) but would make someone a very good starter boat just the way it sits and a bit of TLC. It stayed on the damaged property for several days afterwards and someone took the depth finder off the front and the two optima batteries that was in it, so he couldn't even start it up(today). The trailer looks to be in good shape.
BBF, Not exactly sure what defines it as a "Magnum". Bore, carbs??

Buzz,
I thought you meant the motor type was a magnum. I think I've seen a Mariner Magnum somewhere before. If it's a good enough deal, would it be a good enough deal to put it on the back of the Triton until you really find what you want?
