Any suggestions (Underseat Cooler)
« on: August 31, 2006, 05:02:04 PM »
Anyone have any suggestions or experience in insulating under seat coolers.   If I put ice in its melted before I get to the lake.

can you use some of that spray foam insulation?

we made a jen bucket with it and it held ice for about 8 hrs in the heat of a float trip

Or if you don't want to use the spray foam kind just cut some styrafoam pieces to fit and when you don't want them in you can take them out. ;)

Just a thought, and maybe not possible, but what if you found a good soft-sided cooler (the kind with a zippered lid) that fit in the space, fold the lid back out of the way, and used that?

Our PT175 has an 18gal livewell and I've thought about using it as a cooler because we practice catch & release (when we catch 'em  ::) ).  If I used the livewell as a cooler I could eliminate bringing the 25gal cooler that sits in front of the console and then have a touch more (not much) space in the boat.

I think I am going to try one of those little cool bags like they sell at Walmart and see if that works.
like this...

Then if not I am going to try the soft bag you suggested.

IMO, I would glue them in. Styrofoam peices that is. I'd use thick in the bottom, contouring it with the angles and such(It is tapered in the bottom isn't it?)... and say 1/2" foam on the sides and maybe a thick peice in the top to seal off)or as close as you can get it) so it'll mate to the edges of the walls. It may look a little tacky but I think it'll serve you better if you use foam, IMO.

I did my old tracker that way and worked pretty good! It was square though.

I've got a few NEW styrofoam coolers sitting around the house collecting dust if you want them. (square, rectangle..all sides are flat type) Well, I'll trade ya them for a straw hat w/ brown trim ;D ;).

You haven't made a frisbee out of it yet have you? :pray

Jack, I don't know how big your cooler is but you can add staying power to it by putting frozen bottles of water in it.  I do 16 oz to 1 gal depending on the cooler size, air temp, and how long I will be out.

You can also prolong the life of a bag of ice by leaving it in the plastic sack.

You may have to do like Bigfoot and his Bass Cat.  He keeps clothes in his built in cooler and carrys a small cooler for his drinks and food.  I don't use either the side or front cooler in my Champion unless I take Bear fishing (he always has to have a 6 pack for luck).  I carry a small one and put it in a storage box.  I don't like the water from the melted ice in the bilge or the mildew in the wet coolers.

More than likely thats what Im going to have to do.  Turn it into storage and use a cooler.  (which I do when Im not in a tourney)

My boats has so little storage though I hate to loose what I have.

Is the cooler built with a lip around the top edge, like a dry box? If so, you could always use it as a trash bin. Check to see if small or medium kitchen trash bags will fit the lip of it. Form a stiff wire or sm. rod(continous loop, tigged together) that will fit tight around the lip to hold the trash bag in place.

or a food warmer, or not ;D
