Cable Steering

Has anyone tried to clean out a Cable steering system.  I have hard steering on my boat and need clean the crud out of the system.

It's been a long time since cable,but. I think I used to disconnect, run out cable and wipe it clean with a grease cutter..then re-install....

Anyone else can add to this??
