G III ?
« on: August 20, 2006, 10:10:01 PM »
There's a small car lot about an 1/8 mile from my house and today while driving by we noticed a boat sitting there.  On the way back we stopped to take a look at it.  The brand/lettering on the boat is G III.  It's an older boat but in pretty good shape.  Looks to be about 17' long.  White paint (good shape), riveted, looks to be a mod V-hull, off-set console (almost centerline but more starboard), 2 fishing seats, livewell on the port side, and an older Motorguide 43# TM.  No forward casting deck though, just enough room for the TM.  High sides with pretty good walking space front to back.  70hp Johnson on the back.  The trailer is completely rusted, but appears to be only surface rust.  I opened the console on the bow and there were 2 depth finders in there, one a Humminbird and the other a Lowrance.  No price on the boat. Not looking to buy it, but thought I'd post about it.

Would the GIII be an earlier model of today's G3 ?

Yes it would.

A little history.

A family about 60 miles from Springfield, MO started building aluminum boats.  I am not sure of the brand name of the first line of them.  It may have been Aluma Weld, Aluma Craft or something like that.

Later his son got into the business and built Lowe boats which he developed and sold to OMC.  When they went down Genmar bought the company.  They later sold it when they got out of the aluminum boat business.

Along came the grandson and started the third generation of this family building boats.  He called them Generation III.  Later shortened to GIII and sold to Yamaha.
