Help with Jon Boats
« on: January 03, 2007, 05:37:36 AM »
Here is a question for all you Jon boat users.
I am looking to purchase something around 14?/15? with a 9.9 gas motor.
I want to be able to mount a foot controlled t-motor and two pedestal seats.
My question concerns width. What is too narrow? What is too wide?
My problem is I am 6?5? and weigh 240lbs. I need something that I can mount a tall pedestal seat in and still maintain stability.
Any advice?

The best advice I can give you is to go to a couple of lakes where they rent those kinds of boats and try'em on for size. Other than that, the boat show season is coming on. And of course you can always check out the ones Bass Pro has. :)

Pondhopper:
I go 6 ft. and weight is 300 lbs and I had a jon Boat.

Make sure it has a modified V front end, and not just squared off in the front, that is for stability, width should be very wide also for stability. Estimate 60 in is what mine was and it was very stable with me and two other people.

As far the seats no problem I had two mounted nice and high and they were not butt chairs.

Troling motor mounted to front end no problem that is where  had mine mounted.( 34 lbs thrust wind had a ball with my boat it was 161/2 ft. long.)

Also check total weight with fisherman and tackle and try to find a boat with a large number of lbs  mine was 850 lbs total fisherman and tackle.

Most important items:
Width as much as possible
Total weight fisherman and tackle as much as possible.
I suggest you stand in one while on a lake I did and that is why I went to 161/2 ft. in length.
To narrow in width 48 in. not good.
As for width being to wide the wider the better.

I think you will have a problem with the length you choose 14 or 15 is small, maybe not for just one fisherman.

I hope I was of some help it is a shame I live in Missouri I sold my 161/2 foot with no trolling motor or battery, no live well, and I had two comfortable chairs, trailer, spare wheel and tire,
front deck and rear floor and a 9.9 H/P engine for $ 1450.00 just to try and give you some idea of cost and my boat was 10 years old and in excellant condition first buyer to look at it took it, no hackling or nothing he was very happy with price, he had been looking new.

New is costly
For the boat about $ 1,900.00 estimate
Motor about $1,900.00 estimate
Trolling motor and battery about $ 200.00 tiller operated add another $ 150.00 if you want foot controled.

Best of luck looking but take your time and be sure that is what I done, The dealer I purchased my boat from took me out on a lake in a 15 ft. and it frighten me, then he took me out in the boat I purchased, was happy with it for 10 years and still would have it if I could launch and recover it with no problems.

Carter, If I go to any boat shows around here I will have to come up and see you. I went to our local show last year and all they wanted to show was $50,000 Bass Cats and $100,000 pontoons! The smallest aluminum they had was a 18? river Jon.
We rented a Jon at Cumberland a few years back that I think was in the 15? to 16? range; somewhere around 54? to 60? wide. It seemed to handle our combined 500 pound?s of meat and taters ok and the 10 hp. Motor did a decent job.

George, $1400 for a boat like yours is a steal from what I can find! And your new boat estimates are a bit low, at least for this area. I looked at a Lowe 1554 and boat with trailer alone was right at $3000 with tax. All the other boats I have seen advertised are narrow and they are a two hour drive away. That?s a long way to drive to find out it?s not the boat you want.

Scott,

Reading Carter's post above made me think of something.  You might try calling Boatman's in Owensboro and see if they have any used boats.  People do trade-ins and there might something there.  Just a thought.    :)

I know they (Boatman's) carry the Tracker Grizzly model, but they are pricey, and that's before the price of a trailer to go with it.

WW, I heading over to look at a boat this afternoon when I get off from work. I?ll let you know something this evening.

Carter, Let me know for sure if your coming to Owensboro. I am scheduled to work the last weekend of February but maybe we could meet up Saturday afternoon.  Couple of places over there serve a decent road kill. Might even get WW to come along.
