Uh oh, thats what I was telling you mine did.  Blew the ring and then cracked my piston.
If it didn't mess up your piston or cylinder then it wont be too bad of a fix.

To get mine completely rebuilt by the boat shop (L & L) was only $1200 and I had a 100 hp.  (That was about 5 years ago)

Doing it yourself without having to re-bore or add new pistons shouldn't be anywhere near that much.
Even re-boring and putting in sleeves shouldn't cost that much either.  (Northport Machine can do that)
I may be wrong though prices may have went way up in 5 years, but that was with them doing it.

ouch is right would you be better off to buy new, I am just guessing about buying new to rebuilding a motor for two grand.

This is one of the reasons I never had a large , large motor repair cost are high, my little 10 H.P. got me out there and know my electic motor will also get me out there just not as fast and as far.

I would be venting a lot lounder if it was me.

Once I ripped up lower unit in shallow water if it was not for a safty pin breaking to save lower unit, I was screeming until a fellow fisherman who was a boat repair said he did the same thing and cost was $ 2500.

My cost to replace clutch pin was nothing compared to that a couple bucks.Just had to replace broken couter pin.

I feel you pain E. My first boat had a 1979 model 100HP Evinrude. Unfortunately the original owner never took it in for the recall and then another recall went out. They still did not bring it in. So as the third owner I got stuck with it and that is how I found out the problem...after the engine broke down. It was a piston problem. In 1998 it would have cost me around $2000 or more to get fixed and the same or more to replace it. So I just sold it all for what I could get out of it, $500. I just bought my second boat last year and had the engine checked out beforehand.

the motor is a 50h.p. evinrude lark

i think im gonna do the same thing you did with your junk boat carter: take all the good stuff off the boat (trolling motor, batteries, ect..) and sell it for what ever i can get. then i guess i can figure out a way to get another one. i looked into parts for mine, and even a friggen wire harness for the electric shift is several hundred dollars, thats not including the soilenoid for it. machining would be fairly expensive as well. i know better next time. i'll not ever buy another motor with electric shift, and will never buy another one without checking it out better.
gonna kill me not being able to fish much....esp. now that it is one of my favorite times of year.

motor problems and other mechanic problems are not cheap. My main hobby now is cars and talk about a price jump from spending my $$ in fishing stuff to stuff for the mustang. Basically add another zero and you will be about there in the difference between stuff lol
