Seat Post
« on: July 28, 2008, 02:47:53 PM »
My seat post have been stuck since I have had my boat and I have never been able to remove them.

Anyone have any suggestions on removing them without destroying them?

I have already tried lubricating them, and using pipe straps but that hasn't helped any.

Jack, are they the screw-in type and maybe you just forgot and are trying to just pull them out?

No they have a little tab that pushes in.

This is a pretty common problem on Champions.

If I could figure out a way to make something grip the bar while I was able to pull up and twist I might could get it.

I thought about drilling a hole and putting a pc of round bar through it to hold on to, but not sure if that would make the post unusable afterwards.

Jack, the only other option I can come up with besides possibly damaging the post is to take it to the dealer.

can you rock it back and forth to possibly loosen it up some.  Maybe add some type of lube?

Is it possible to remove the entire pedastal base with the post in it, then work on it?

Good thought WW.

Can you access it from the bottom?  Most bases are hollow and you might be able to drive it up with a punch or dowel rod and a few light taps.

The base is one of the real big ones.  I would have to remove a lot of carpet to do so, so I really dont want to do that.

Now that I see those post are pretty cheap I may just go ahead and do what I have to do even if I destroy it.

oh yeah that sounds like alot more work then its worth removing carpet.  My boat has a well right below the seat ped.  I was praying yours was the same.

Let us know how it works out.  I'm really lost how it got stuck.

Its common on most older Champions.  I guess its just the way they are made.

One of the fellows over on the Champ board at the BBC said he got his to come out by using bottle jacks.   I may have to give that a try.

No clue.  Mine were stuck when I bought the boat.  I guess the pole is a little too large.

If I could ever get them out they tell me to sand it down and it will solve the problem.

Jack, you might want to try a strap wrench to turn it while pushing the botton. If you get it to turn it might scrw itself out.

Strap wrenches I had did not work.  As a matter of fact I broke both of them I had on it.
(mine weren't super heavy duty or anything though)

If you're talking about trying to jack it free from underneath the post, be careful that you don't apply too much pressure and pop/crack something under the jack.  If you can get underneath it, maybe place some rags beneath that area and apply some penetrating oil around the post and post socket, let it sit for awhile then try moving it.   :scratch

Yeah man, put a board or something like that under the jack to displace the force being applied.

I’m in agreement with G on this one. It must be glued in!
If all else fails, cut the sucker off and drill out the remainder.
Or you could try a small amount of explosives.
Or a smoke wrench.
Or………

I have not had a chance to even try yet.   I did spray it with the stuff Buzz gave me, but haven't tried to remove them yet.  I might try tonight since I will be the only one home.
