Tracker sinking?
« on: April 16, 2006, 11:29:05 AM »
Did you guys see the post at BPS forum about a guys friend who had a 16' Tracker sinking in 40' of water?  Seems to me that with the installed foam it shouldn't have sank to the bottom.  What are your thoughts about it?

Apparently the guy was towing his friends boat (out of gas) in and it started sinking.  Tow boat cut the tow rope before it went down.

I read it. It doesn't really make sense though unless it's a 16' jon. Anything with a deck on it is filled with a ton of foam to prevent it from completely sinking. I'm also a little curious about what made it sink in the first place. It was being towed because it was out of gas. Tracker is aluminum. It would have to have a hole ripped into it or the drain plug pulled out. Unless they pulled the front end under water while towing it, but you'd have to drag it pretty far that way to completely fill it up. Anyways.... that's why I have insurance. Insurance is cheap ($375/year) and protects me from things like that, as well as someone else who's uninsured hitting me.

Good point; maybe they were towing it too quick and took some [a lot] water over the front.  If it happened while towing it would have the effect of plowing deep and basically nose-diving under.

What all does your insurance cover?  Mine runs about $190 a year with State Farm.

I'm in MA so insurance is always more expensive. Covers full replacement of the hull for damage, replacement of the engine for damage, uninsured boat hitting me, theft, fire, vandalism, everything that's on it (rods, electronics, etc...). If mine sank to the bottom I'd just call them up and get it replaced. It's pretty much the same as my auto insurance, but the replacement price is the cost of a new one, not a depretiative value like in a car.

I'm gonna double-check my coverage, as I don't believe it covers electronics or items such as rods, tackle, etc.

I have full coverage and it runs $117 a year.

The only thing I can think is the boat was over its weight limit.
