Hunting with a traditional style
« on: May 19, 2011, 11:49:32 AM »
Anybody here hunt with a traditional style muzzleloader?

I have a Lyman GPR in .54 caliber caplock. I shoot a .535 ball in a .016 linen patch over 80 grains of Hogdon's Triple Seven in 3fG. I finally got the load and sights tuned. I can put balls in a 6 inch bull at a hundred yards consistently.
I know that's not nearly as good as moderns with hunting bullets, but it's pretty good for a ball rifle.

In Virginia, we have a black powder season that opens before the rifle season. I'm gonna try to kill one this year with my ball rifle. If I can put a 230 grain .535 ball in the heart/lung area, I should be able to park him with it.

thats really good for a traditional BP rifle.  I have an inline but my buddy hunts with a 58 cal hawken from TC.  I've shot it and its neat.  Maybe one of these days I'll do it.

I used to hunt with a muzzleloader.  I did a 50 Hawken from a kit one time but kind of drifted away from it because we had few deer in those days.  No we have tons of them and I don't have the urge to get back into it since the seats in the Champ are much more comfortable than sitting on the ground. ;D

I shoot a .50 percussion.

I read some history on muzzleloaders once and found out that in-line guns were actually developed about 200 or so years ago.
