10/16/07---Short river trip
« on: October 17, 2007, 03:59:55 PM »
Yesterday, my neighbor called me at about 2 PM, asking if I wanted to go to the river and fish with him in his Tracker boat.  Didn't hesitate a second as he's a tournament Basser(just came in first at Lake Oconee last weekend with his partner) in addition to Bassin' for fun and he know's the Ocmulgee River like he know's his backyard.  He can place his casts and pitches like no one else I've fished with.

For those that might not know, the Ocmulgee is the river that formed the oxbow lake that the World's Record Bass was caught out of way back in 1932.  That oxbow(known as Lake Montgomery) is filled in and silted over from what I've heard but the river itself still yield's some heavy Bass, Sturgeon, catfish, mudfish, and of course, panfish.

We floated down from the get-in spot South of H'wy 96.  I caught a 2(?) lb mudfish on a Chatterbait of all things!  We saw a 4-6'(?) long Sturgeon jump completely out of the water a few yards from the boat.  No other bites after an hour or so so he cranked up the outboard and took us upriver to a slough just a short way north of the get-in spot.

Right away, he hooked a 4-6(?) lb mudfish on an Ol' Monster, T-rigged worm.  Both mudfish were made into gator food with the use of a 22 mag.  A short time later, he hooks and lands a 5(we didn't weigh it) lb Bass.  That was all we caught but what a joy to be on that historic river.

Left-click on the pics for enlargement:

5 lber caught on a pitched jig

The Bass came off of that log in front of the boat.

 Nice river shot

 Another one

That river cover shot looks as if there may be some water off to the upper right...Is that the opening to the old Montgomery Lake?

Thanks for posting these Dan. Nice looking areas....and fish.

Dan,

I love to envision fishing that type of area for bass and what not.  It is so different from the Pacific Northwest for sure.

Nice pics as usual and great report!

Thanks y'all.

No Bb, we were some 20-60(???) miles north of Lake Montgomery, just South of H'wy 96.
