First Big(sizable) Fish
« on: October 12, 2008, 06:35:14 PM »
Well, it happens to be  4lb. or so grinnel(bowfin, mudfish, grindle, etc.), but hey, that's ok!

I looked back when I heard a big splash  ::2 and it had her bowed up, I coached her through it and she handled it well.

I released it with a pair of pliers.

Sorry about the quality. It's a freeze frame from a short video because in my own excitement I mashed the wrong button ;D

She was on the back deck(as you can see there, I had just been back there with her showing her how to work that worm, lol)) and she got quite all of a sudden and I heard a big splash. I looked back at her and she was bowed up fighting what appeared to be a rather large fish. she never let up. It jumped more than once and pulled drag several times before giving out too. We never boated it and did the pliers out over the water thing. She would've been rurnt the rest of the day but I wouldn't let her, lol. We had a great outting, we really did!

That is partly why I set the hook on the bass she reeled in(my insticts kicked in too) AFTER catching the grinnel, trying to get her fishing again. It was successful. I tied on a C.B. for her when we hit the river banks on the way back.

I caught 6 or 7 small bass myself w/ one being 2.250#. I did break off one that felt pretty solid early. Most of my time was either on the front or back deck showing her things.

She is getting much better at casting( I asked her to cast to the edge of the weedline that morning and she did real good). She still needs a little practice working the lures/bait while they're in the water though(fishing from a boat) but I'm sure she'll pick up on that in short order.

We put in at Lock 7 and went up toward Brush Creek.

Carter, The net was in the boat from the State tournament. I bought it to take with me just in case my non-boater partner screamed for the net. ;D

Them grinnels do put up a heck of a fight and no, they are not allowed to come into the boat!
A fight like that should keep her coming back!
