nice five pounder with a funny story
« on: June 04, 2007, 01:53:55 PM »
went this weekend caught a really good fish in a very peculiar way. we were fishing a really woody bank and i cast out a small 1/4 oz. jig and, all the sudden, my line on my spinnin reel goes crazy and knots up horribly. so, i pull the knotted line off the spool and pull knotted line from the line guides; while doing this, i notice a little tension on the line but figure that my jig is hung up. so, i proceed to try and fix the knots but i am unable to. so, i cut the bad section (probably 20 yards or better) out of the line and start to pull in the line so i can get back my lure. luckily i left the line in the guides because when i started pulling my lure in, it started swimming and fighting quite violently!! i ended up getting the fish in with out using a reel, my hand was the drag(thats tough with 8 lb. test!!)!! kind of like fly fishing. the fish was a 5 pound
largemouth. pretty neat way to end a REALLY tough day on the water.  ;D

earlier that day i hooked into the most powerful fish i have ever set the hook on. unfortunatly, in all my brilliance, i horsed this monster and broke him off. i saw his belly flash and it was huge. i cant confirm what it was, it looked like the belly of a monster bass. but, it could have been a buffalo or a big drum. i could have missed the fish of a life time  :'(

to be honest, this weekend was REAL tough at bankhead. only one other keeper landed all day. tons of dinks, and that other quality bite (that i think was a 8 to 10 lb bass) that could have been any thing.

oh man, the one i caught i almost consider just lucky. the one i lost, i felt the bite and set the hook, and should have caught the fish. i just turned into an idiot once i saw (and felt) how big it was, i didnt play it right and broke it off. it'll haunt my for a while, or atleast until i catch a 10 pounder!!!
