Quickie this evening! 7/23
« on: July 23, 2007, 08:31:37 PM »
Couldn't pass up some fishy weather this evening, so I hit a local lake for a couple of hours from about 6 -7:30PM.  Light rain on and off with a moderate breeze.  Fished the windy banks and points for quite a while without a bite, alternating between a jig, my shallow swimbait and a Mattlures trout!  Continued into a sheltered area and got pounded on the Mattlures by something that felt very solid,..but it came unbuttoned after a second or two! :(
Fished the swimbait for a while longer without a bite,..then headed to some shallow weedy areas and put everything away except the jig rod.  Picked up a 2-lber  and then another that went 2.5 on the outside edges of lilypads.  Had a third one that looked about 2.5 but it came unbuttoned at boatside and then wrapped up the evening with this guy that went 4 lbs even! :D   Everything came on a  black Gman 1-ounce jig with a double trailer consisting of a Paca-chunk topped with a Joe's trailer!

I?m sitting here looking at my G-Man 1oz. Jig and thinking that with two trailers that is one bulky bait!
Nice catch.

Nice catch.

Yes, the added bulk is essential!  It allows you to cast the thing a mile and still be able to get it into the water (relatively  ::)) softly,..and the additional plastic slows the fall somewhat!  If you start using this kind of bait, you will find that you can fish about 2-3 times farther away from the boat!  This allows you to cover a lot more water because you can fish a greater number of targets without repositioning the boat and it also spooks the fish much less, especially in clearer water!  It is rare that I'm using any other jig setup anymore! ;)

Just4fun,
I know that you are fishing water that is a bit more clear than I am use too. With that in mind, what kind of line are you using. I almost always throw mine on braid, even when I am not fishing heavy weeds.
Also do you use rattles?

Great catching J4F!!!  I thought my 3/4 oz jigs were HUGE but you've proven me wrong!
