i caught this big female bowfin in about 3 feet of water on a jointed rapala shad rap..i've been "hooked"ever since...that was in august..i've caught more since then but nothing like this one. They fight hard..even when landed they still try to bite(those teeth are nothing to scoff at,i have a scar from this one) when the bass are tight lipped bowfin are my focus...real brawlers

Looks like you have it at home?  Did you eat it?

I never have.  Heard they were pretty bony.

yeah they're alot of fun..i had no idea they fought like that..i thought it was a big largemouth at first but i gave her a tug ya know to see what it was...my heart was pounding when i finally laid eyes on her. this was my longest  fight..about 10 minutes because it seemed like she never got tired lol...i did take her home but not for eating i heard the flesh has a jelly type of thing with it(no thanks)..a friend of mine does some nice taxidermy work so..yeah. also you'll notice im wearing gloves..i dont usually but Bowfins are the slimest fish i've ever dealt with in my 20+years of fishing(im 26)
i dont normally keep ANY fish but this one was special..they're all over the place here in virginia, its one of those lesser targeted species..bass are really my thing but whenever i fish the chickahominy river there's always a good chance that a bowfin just might destroy my lure lol..its ok..what an incredible animal...the teeth are amazing to me

thanks for checkin out the thread guys..i appreciate it
