Gainesville/Vienna Flood Issues
« on: March 09, 2011, 08:07:59 PM »
We have had some calls regarding the flooding on the Gainesville pool. Right now it is forecast to be above flood stage Saturday morning at take off. As of now, the board still has not made a decision on fishing the tournament Saturday. We will continue to watch the forecasts and see if any changes are made. Hopefully it will drop faster than predicted and we can get this tournament in. We will update here as soon as we know something which will probably be Friday afternoon when the latest river forecast goes out.

Hang in there guys.  The Board must follow the procedures set out in the bylaws.  We either go or postpone (next saturday or earliest possible date, dependent on permit availability).  The one idea that we might consider is flipping Gainesville and Pickensville as few member will be able to practice for Pickensville if we postpone one week.  I have not been able to check on permits (tried several times, but the person is hard to catch).  The forecast water heights have been coming down so, there is a chance.  I will also check on the availability of the lower ramps, which should be areas where the current is not quite as strong.

All in all, we are working on it and will make the best decision possible under the circumstances.  Any change will likely disadvantage someone, but we (the Board) try to make the fairest decision possible.

The decision will likely go right down to the wire (5 pM Friday), but at this point I would think "fish".  Continue to watch this site for updates as they become available.

You laugh, we had a sampling site in Ohio on the Little Miami River that we called VW because of the bug that was buried in the bank at that site.  One trip after a particularly heavy rain it was GONE!

Well, the river crested about 1/2 a foot below and well in advance of predicted peak.  It is on its way down.  We will continue  to watch closely but signs are all positive at this point in time.

Still watching carefully.  Drop is well in advance of prediction (Army Corps does not predict - National Weather service does).  grit in the gears appears to be a holding of water in Gainesville to protect Demopolis.  Keep monitoring this site for further updates.  We will likely go right up to 5 PM before we make a decision.  We are hoping to get a report on a visual inspection today.

Remember that AL water law says that you are trespassing if gain access to a land owner's property in you boat because of a flood.

Well guys, flip a coin on this one.  The forecast is for the river to hold at 125 for the rest of today.  The actual data indicates that the river will drop below flood stage a 6 AM tomorrow morning.  The Board is continuing to watch the situation and will make our best guess at 5 PM this evening.  I am still hoping to fish, but we will not fish come @#*! or high water, rather we will fish if reasonable judgement indicates that prudent precaution will keep all safe.

Even still, if it is not navigable under normal pool, then by alabama law you can't enter it. It is still private property. The one across from the landing is private property for the most part. Only the southern third is on corps property. A lot of people still do go in beaver ponds when the water is up but they aren't supposed to.

In all the years I've been fishing tournaments and running into this situation, the river's usually drop out faster than predicted, especially if you don;t have anymore rain.  Good Luck!!!

I say lets get it in gear and do this.  I know that some might be bothered by high water, just be carefull and use your head and there is no reason we cannot fish. >:D It should make for a suspenseful weigh-in ;D ;D ;D
