Getting Federated
« on: November 10, 2006, 09:22:29 AM »
The lower cost way to go would be to join the TBF, which is $15 per person + $30.00 for the club.    We would only have to raise our club membership dues to $35.00, and we could take the other $30 out of our dues, and hopefully make it up plus a lot more with a fund raiser or two.

I think this is a very smart decision considering the cost to give us a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy, $25,000 excess medical, and the $10,000 accidental death, as well as a few more benefits.

I heard someone say "well we sign a waiver when we join the club not to hold the club responsible for accidents, etc."  Thats true, that relieves the club of responsibility to the member,  but this insurance policy is liability insurance to cover bodily damage, property damage, personal injury, or advertising injury to third parties. It will not cover a member suing another member.  It acts as a secondary insurance to cover what a club members personal boat insurance does not cover.  (See the attached document)

Here is an email I got from the Alabama TBF President.

Quote
Jack,

You can go to the TBF web site (www.bassfederation.com
and click on the join tab and it will give you a step
by step of what is required to join.  Under member
stuff you can select the forms to submit to the state
along with sample bylaws.

The TBF, Inc dues are $15 per member per year and we
encourage members to become members of FLW Outdoors
also but it is not a requirement in AL.  The state
dues to affiliate with Alabama Bass Federation, Inc.
is $30 per club per year.

If you need other information or if you would like for
me to send printed copies of all the information, let
me know by email.

If there is anything we can do to help you become
members of TBF and Alabama, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at
one of our events this coming year.

Thanks

Al Redding
President

dont you mean 20+15? also, i wont mind getting federated as long as its with flw.

so, if we are federated, and, in one of our tourn. i crash my boat into antother boat, it will be covered by the insurance(the other boat)?

$15 + $30 is the amount that has to be sent to the TBF.

And yep the TBF, is the FLW one.

And yes it will cover what your personal boat insurance does not cover.  Check out the Insurance FAQ document I attached and maybe it will clarify it a bit.

To add to what Jack said, as Secretary of the Club I have been tracking the requirements of the various lakes/ramps for holding bass tournaments.  Depending on the body of water, any tournament, tournaments involving more than 7 boats or tournaments involving more than 10 boats require a permit.  A requirement of getting a permit is either $1,000,000 in insurance or posting of a $1,000,000 bond ? we cannot afford either.

So far, we have been flying just under the radar on size, so I have not had to get us any permits.  However, if we grow next year and begin to attract 8-11 boats were tournament, I would get us permits.  This would require federation, as this is the only way we can afford $1,000,000 in insurance.

It is natural to say "Just blow off the permits".  Well, there are risks for the officers of the club or the hosts for any given tournament.  Most of the law enforcement officers protecting us when we are out on the water are great people.  But, there are a few (and several of us could name names) that seem to take a particularly perverse joy in sticking it to fishermen and hunters.  I can't say for sure, but I bet that one of these rare individuals could make a ton of legal trouble for a club member if they chose to do so.

Bottom line, if we are planning on growing we should plan to federate (if for no other reason that to allow the club officers to obtain the necessary permits to stay legal when we put on tournaments).

I agree 100% RHF, and I think for sure we will have over 8 boats in a tourney next year.

And that was also something I was thinking about, If there is ever a problem, they will come after ever person in the club, but especially the officers.

http://www.bassfederation.com/main.asp?page=43

That page list some of the other benefits, which I'm not even considering but are there for us if we do Federate.

the more i think about it, the more i think it is a real good idea to do it. our club is still small and we could easily fly under the radar for a while, but it would be irresponsible in my opinion.

Got another email from Al Redding and there is no deadline, but it is better to join by Dec 15th to take
advantage of a full year of insurance and also have the ability to fish any qualifiers that members may
wish to do.

Apparently each club can send 6 people to the regional qualifiers.

I sent an email back to Al, asking him if we didn't organize and join until after Dec. 15, does it mean we can not send anyone to the qualifiers.    I would really like to know as I think there are a few of us that would like to go.
