Our Lay and Mitchell tournaments
« on: June 13, 2008, 07:36:19 PM »
I am just wondering if the rising gas prices is going to keep anyone from fishing them?

At $4.00 a gallon I am figuring it's going to cost me $112 gas to get there and back, and I am sure about $30 on the water, so those tournaments right now will cost me about $150 just in gas.

I have always stayed in a hotel the night before on my previous trips, but I don't think so this year with gas costing this much.

Everyone else still on board to fish them?

I usually like to get a motel too, but this year I would have to take out a loan! It's going to cost me $150 just to fish today (Bankhead) so I don't think I'll be making those two trips. >:(

I live in HOmewood so Mitchell and Lay are actually closer for me than most of the other tournaments.   Feeling your pains on the gas prices though.  Won't see me and ARchie running very far from the boat landing at any tournament.

I am planning on fishing both of them. I have never been to Mitchell so I am looking forward to that one.

I'll be fishing both of them (gas costs for me will be about $70, truck plus boat).

After some thought on this very thing, I plan on fishing whats on the schedule for the remainder of the year with the exception of Mitchell. Mitchell will probably be to close after the State Tournament for me to make it. But we'll see?

My partner(Dav) will not make mitchel this year due to work, if I remember correctly.

I plan to fish both.
I have not fished Mitchell in two year and looking forward to it.
I want to finish out the schedule this year...as is.
Next years schedule we should rethink because of gas prices.

Good fishing,
Ellis

As to next year's schedule, it is set during annual organizational meeting, which will be held the first Saturday of November.  We can set up with zero, one or two far lakes in the schedule.  Close lakes are defined as being within a 60 mile radius of downtown Northport and are Lake Tuscaloosa, Holt, Warrior (old lock eight), Aliceville, Gainesville, Demopolis, Bankhead and Oliver (which we gave up as too small and inconvenient with its designation as the home water of the UA sculling team).  Our original schedule (2005) had us fish Lake Tuscaloosa 3 times (early, mid summer and last, if I remember correctly).

There are three more landings that are close that probably should be considered and they are Moundville, Fosters and the one below Oliver. I think that is Mill Creek or something like that. It would be mainly river fishing. Not many sloughs. Maybe a good summer time tournament. Just my thoughts. ;D

We used to have the landing below Oliver Dam on our schedule but at the time the majority agreed that it should be taken off.    We could for sure look at it again.

I have never fished below oliver before(on this end anyway). It would be interesting for sure! I did test run my boat there once last year before taking it home so I know what the first couple of miles looks like. Lots of current to boot! We use to fish out of Lock 6 landing back when I was with Black Warrior Bass Trackers Club(which is a few miles or so past to where you turn to go to Lock 7/Roebucks Landing on hwy 60 btw). Not so sure how safe it is now though, it being where it is located.??

I cant do nite tournaments with the home/work schedules the way they are, so count me out on those if there is any thinking on that. Just cant do'um.

I would hate to add it back actually.  Its not a good place to fish at all for miles and miles.   I used to fish it quite often, and had a few spots but not very many.    Since they blocked off the dam I haven't been back.

I wouldn't mind adding back Oliver Lake though.   I would just as soon fish it than to go all the way to Lay and Mitchell and only have 5 boats.

All good thoughts - I think we need to fish the schedule as set up for this year.  Certainly cannot change the schedule without a general membership meeting.

But for next year, we can change if that is what the majority of the club members want to do.

I was talking about next year.   We should stick to the schedule this year even if 5 boats show up.

It's going to depend on AOY points and making the classic to whether I fish Lay or not (like last year).  And also on my partner.

I will be at Mitchell for sure just because its my favorite lake of all we fish.
