September tournament - Holt lake
« on: September 03, 2007, 10:23:35 AM »
Hello all,

Who is going to fish?  Old Lock 15 is a tough ramp.  It is a single and has curbs all the way to the water.  You turn 90 degree into a turn-in and back around another 90 degrees to get down the ramp.  It can make you look bad in a heartbeat ;)  There is room for one truck/trailer in the turn around (even though it has lines for two).

We will check-in in the parking lot and send one boat at a time down to the ramp.  Once that boat has back into the ramp, we will send the next down to stage in the turn-around (once you launch your boat, it is a straight shot back to the parking lot).  Civilian daylight is 6:04 AM (good guess at safe light) and I will close on-time check-in at 5:50 AM.  We will assemble on the water just outside of the large deadhead that marks the entrance to the ramp cove.  Watch your big motor near the ramp - there is a single stickup about 4 inches under the water about 10 ft off the dock.  We will check livewells at the dock, so if you motor to the ramp, walk up the parking lot to check in and I'll see to having you livewell checked.  Assuming 10 boats and 5 min per boat to launch we will need 50 minutes to get everyone in the water, so arrive early.  I'll be there no later than 4:45 AM

We will also weigh-in in the parking lot - pull you boat before weighing your fish.  I will set up a holding tank in my boat or truck (LARGE cooler with "Please release me", ice and aerator).  Once weigh-in is over, I'll back down the ramp and release all the fish (you are, of course, welcome to carry your fish back down the ramp if you choose).  If you motor over, you will have to tie up and carry your fish up to the weigh-in.

For some reason, floating logs are always a problem on Holt, so whenever running be careful (ask buzzbait if you have any doubts about this).  Also, you have to assume that if you are not in the main channel there are stickups and even then there are at least two that I know of that are in 60+ feet of water (a mile or so south of Old Lock 15).

See you there,

RHF

Well, I'm going to try to be there. (lots of stuff going on...Dad/hospital/thrice, Holiday week at work, co-worker off the latter part of week to boot) I will fore-warn C.S. of the possibilities. I have every intention in being there, but, something may call for me to not be.

Buzzbait,

What's the story on the floating log?
I hit one at Lock 8 several years back and it tore the transom out.
Did not sink , but had to idle back to the landing.

The bream are bitting really good! ::2

Shortly after buying my Bass Tracker Tournament Pro-V 17 many years back, We were coming around the bend in the shade line just above Rocky Branch (as we popped into veiw of the eastern sky) just after good sun up. The sun was huge that morning, just above the trees and as big and bright as all get out.(all the following happened in short order eventhough it sounds drawn out) All I couild manage to see was a black and white type scenerio it was so bright.  Anyway, I thought I saw something just ahead, had backed off just a hair because I wasn't sure...thought it might have been a boat wake ripple..., went another few feet and there it was..A log as big as an 18 wheeler tire round  and 50-60' long (no trunk and no top) had obviously went under for some reason, and then it bobbed up. I knocked it into Neutral, the back of the boat went up and the front went down, we were going to hit it head on, and hard(trimming up the whole time), so, I punched it foward/wot and it rared up and went over the log(still trimming up!). Went over it, the skeg hit the log. Another hair on the trim and I think I woulda cleared it ;D When it sent the motor upward I thought it was going to come up onto the back deck of the boat it hit so hard. It didn't, thank goodness, but when it recoiled it peeled the back end dang near off. The top edge of the transom was torn/pulled back 6 inches from where it originally mounts. Once it came to a stop, and I finally let go of the trim switch, we sat there for a long, long time :whew . eventually we idled back to the landing after fishing in the area for awhile. I was suprised it didn't sink but was glad the bilge pump kept up....really didn't take on a whole lot of water. After contacting the Ins. Co. I took the boat to Northriver first to have it checked out motor wise,  it was fine, minus a little paint on the skeg. Had the boat repaired after that. Took them just over a month and cost the Ins. and me combined $1,800 (back then) to repair.

Kept it for another 20 years and fished many a day out of it. I almost bought another almost like it not too long before I bought "the barge".
