BAMA----MS Road Trip
« on: October 25, 2011, 07:33:48 AM »
It looks like I may have nothing to do in Jan. so Red and I are taking a car trip to MS and Bama to look at some lakes and campgrounds for a possible 4 week fishing trip this winter.  We decided that TX would not be a pretty place to be after all the dry weather and burned off acres.

Where in BAMA is a good place to camp and fish and what is the weather like in Jan?

I don't know what the weather in January is like but Guntersville Lake is a great place. My family and I camped at the state park there in July a few years ago and had no problems. I also camped there a couple of days in March and it was not too bad either.

Jig Man that sounds like a great way to spend January. I can't think of any better. I no longer have any more hard water fishing gear since our moving sale. Can't offer any useful suggestions but I do have a couple questions. Have you considered Florida ? I understand your concern about the drought  affecting water conditions in the Lone Star State. On the other hand, not being entirely sure what your objectives are in Jan. other than getting out of the house I might consider Falcon or Amistad. Even though there is a drought these lakes filled up a couple years ago  and have lots of water and my understanding is they are fishing very well. The security issue is IMO a bit blown out of proportion. I think one would be safe if they stayed in US waters and used a little common sense. That is an opportunityto land some really, really big fish. Florida would be on my list as I don't believe it is that much further and the difference in temps would be worth it. Downside might be the additional fuel to tow your house. LOL !

Are you primarily hoping for a mixed bag, a bass experience, or a sackful of specks ? This will also make a difference. If a good crappie trip in Florida with a few bass mixed in sounds like a possibility I can refer you to someone close to you that has yearly experience in that area and may be able to give you info or answer questions.

Carter, G. is close to the lat. of Little Rock.  I have been there in the winter and it is not warm enough.  Thanks for the thought.

Steve,  I am mainly interested in bass.  I can catch specs here all winter, if I stay.  We made a trip to Amistad and after talking to US people and looking that desert region over, we decided it isn't for us.   As for Falcon, my next door neighbor has a place less than an hour from there.  We plan to spend some winter time with them and maybe take in Falcon as he will be taking his Skeeter with him and he leaves in 2 weeks.

Jordan Lake on the Coosa maybe for the large spotted bass.  If they are generating you can usually catch a bunch.
Weather temp is for sure hit and miss anywhere in Bama in Jan.

Jigman, when I went down to Tuscaloosa in January and fished with Jack the high for the day was 46 degrees. I know them folks down there thought it was a bit on the cold side, but I came from temperatures that were 20 deg. colder! I don’t think you will find any use for your heavy UA gear down there.
The long range winter forecast is looking good for that area. Not so much for us. Sounds like a good decision from this latitude! ;D

Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin in Alabama is a good place to park a camper or RV and shouldn't be as cool as the northern part of the state (most days  ;D) that time of year. The only thing i dislike is beaching the boat near or at the site but if you trailer every day then you wouldn't have to concerned with the rocks(There are some docks available in some areas in the camp grounds).

Golly Buzz, I had totally forgotten that I planned this same thing a couple of years ago.  Well things have changed as I had an aged ill m-i-l which kept us from going anywhere.  She passed and we don't have obligations now so we may get away in Jan.

We are leaving Sunday am heading to look at some places in LA, MS, then BAMA.

We are making a list of places mentioned and going by them to see in person if we want to load up all the gear and spend some time at one or more places warmer than good old cold MO.

Thanks so much guys.

Jig Man, I remembered that and assumed just what you are attempting now. I, at heart, agreed with what JJ was saying in that post. The TN river lakes in AL that JackJ mentioned in the "previous post" is some places you guys may want to consider if you do come this way. I've never fished any of them either, except Guntersville, but my FIL/MIL use to camp(and fish) at those from time to time ... Pickwick, wilson, wheeler and guntersville too up that way. In Jan. it will be a tad cooler up that way by a few degrees(chances are.) than T-town and points south.

The cold fronts in the winter months here usually drive pretty deep into the state. It's a damp cold usually, and it hurts.  ;D

Aint gotta clue about LA.

Thanks Buzz.  When your cold fronts dive just remember that we were 2-3 days ahead of that and many ° colder.  We are going to be in BAMA by T or W to look around.
