Is everyone out fishing or what?
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:15:43 PM »
This place has been so desolate lately I think y'all must be out fishing. I would be but my van's two front wheel bearings are shot. My neighbor is a part-time mechanic and has a lift in his garage. He is going to do the job for me. He never charges me anything but I always give him "porkchop money" anyway  :D At least I have a car here to drive until my van is done. So I have been working at our football fieldhouse with some other booster club members. We are painting the building (outside only) and getting everything ready for the upcoming season. Which starts 12 AUG for us. Well, y'all enjoy this beautiful weather we are having and try to stay warm  ;D

I actually got a lot of work in, so fishing took a back seat. Man, I needed that little rush of work. Gonna help big time.

I'm more like "what". I've only been like 4 times this summer with only minimal success....two or three here, three or four there, and haven't anything special to tell(dinksville). I have also had to work a good bit lately too, and of course went on vay-cay just last week. I might go tomorrow afternoon, dunno yet.

I'm in the same boat as Buzz. Only been out around 4 times myself. Work has been the big problem; I would be working today had I not taken a vac day yesterday.
I'm going to give it a shot today. Who knows maybe I can remember how to catch a fish  or two? ::)

Well, i didn:t get to go, again! Anyone fish today/this weekend?

This morning, it was warm but not overly hot. The wind was calm, the sun lingered to pop out and the mug in the air felt, well, doable. But, simce my yard has suffered since April 27th of this year(actually a little longer than that), this weekend was utilizrd getting it beat back(including most of the tree debris) to a more managable level. This means i now can get to the boat and maybe just maybe use it, in the near future. When it starts getting a little cooler at night, if things will stay at a doable level around here for a while, i'm goin to hit'em hard!

Tightlines guys!

Well I got out Friday night for a club tournament from 7:30pm - 3am. I only caught two little keeper bass that almost made two pounds  ::) My partner just could not manage to stick a bass. I caught those two bass before it got dark. After darkness fell so did my catching. I hate night fishing  >:( We have two more regular tournaments on the KY River and then in mid September we have our two-day classic. I am looking forward to that because we usually do well at Green River Lake.
This weekend I am going to Murray State University with my oldest son. I will help him move in. Yes I am dragging my boat along. I plan to fish Ky Lake and Lake Barkley for a couple of days. Probably stay at a campsite so I can plug boat in at night. Good luck to those of you getting out. Scott or Greg, if y'all see this and want to go out with me give me a shout.

Carter, Give me some dates and I'll see what the calendar holds.

I went out this Friday and Saturday; Friday I caught 7 total but you won't believe the sizes. If you add them all together they might weigh 4 pounds! ::)
Saturday was a reallly cloudy day and I was expecting better. It was until the lightning started. Three fish, all about 2 1/2 pounds, then I was out'a there.
I was amazed that some people stayed. I don't mind rain, but holding a lightning rod in my hand during a thunderstorm is not my idea of fun things to do. :o

We had a club tourney yesterday. The one person who I didn't want to win did. I came in second. My lead is narrowing and we have one more event left. I caught a limit of fish, all on crankbaits. That is new territory for me as I usually don't stray too far from a jig. Today my  arm is aching in the muscle from all that casting. I mostly used a DD22. I lost 2 crankbaits, 1 Strike King 1.5 squarebill and 1 Lucky Craft Rick Clunn deep diver.  >:(

Overall it was a good day.
We have begun to receive scattered rains here in the last few days so that is good and the temps are beginning to moderate.

I beat Stockton to a froth yesterday am.  I only got 2 fish.  It was 102° when I loaded at noon.  I'm packing up the jeep and heading for the mountains next week to find some coolness.

I went to Maine for some fun in the sun this past weekend. Took the kids out on the Zodiak (inflatable) and buzzed around the bay for a bit. I came up to a rock formation and looked down into about 3-4' of water and saw 32" plus stripers schooling. Must have been about 20 of them in that 1 spot.

I left the area quietly then open it up to the mooring, paddled the dingy to shore and ran back to get my gear. Made the mistake of stopping and telling my cousin about the sighting. Well, he had to go and tell some more relatives, who lally-gagged and finally, about an hour later, we're on the spot where the fish were. Yes were.

I'll never make that mistake again. Lips are sealed in the future... ;)

Congrats on the second place finish Get!

Jig Man I hope you find a cool spot. Looks like we will be cooling down some here this week. Just had a storm pass through with more possible. They are calling for a low of 61* one night this week.

J10, were the folks you told on your spot by time you got there? And if so, did they catch them all or what?

Steve I'd rather take a whippin than toss a crank all day. I hate the dang things; although I do own a few they almost never see water! Like you I want to throw jigs but here lately they just ain't doin what their intended to do. Last Saturday some cheap spoon saved my day.
With the water temps holding around 88* the fishing has gotten really tough. Tougher than I remember in several years. That being said I got to thinking back to several years past when I would always throw a Stick-O in these conditions. Maybe I should try it again? ???

Ha ha That describes me too. I'm trying to get the hang of learning when those crankbaits can help me put fish in the boat.
Our water temps are about the same . I saw some at 86 the other day.  Funny you mention the stick-o. I did resort to using one the last hour of the tourney. Only problem was I was using it with 15lb Power Pro and a 12lb fluoro leader. I fished it weightless and it didn't sink very well with the braid. I was too lazy to rig it differently.
Here it is Wed. evening and my arm is still smarting. LOL !

I have to admit I don't think the braid would work well. I always threw mine on 10lb. Stren mono, but now I'm rigged all floro or braid so I'm not sure how the floro will affect them. I'll give it a try soon and let you know.
PS I have never thrown any other stick bait than the Stick-O's or Tiki Sticks. Call me a cheap skate if you want but fish in my area didn't seem to care.

(I usually dectect this while using some form of soft plastic bait) ... the thing i've noticed over the years is, when your getting bit but no hook ups, if you'll pick up a crank and work that area and depth, chances are you'll get bit. Then again, if this is taking place in extremely shallow water, it may not be that you need to change to a crank just yet(try it though) but to change an element of what you are already doing.,i.e. bait size, fall rate, change presentation of the bait.
