Just got home from South Bend, IN
« on: June 29, 2011, 10:23:00 PM »
I took my son up there for a football camp at Notre Dame which started on Sunday and ended today. While he was doing his thing I fished. I brought my boat with me. The first day I went fishing in the lake at Potato Creek State Park. It is a 327 acre lake (shallow) and electric motor only. I caught a decent size LM on a t-rigged Chigger Craw right off. I only had a short time that evening to fish so I was only on the water a little over an hour. Just caught the one. Maybe two pounds. The next day I went to the St. Joseph River out of Maggie's Landing. I ran close to seven miles up river. Mostly to get away from incoming rain. Didn't work out that way.  ::) But, I caught a bunch of fish. Mostly largemouth and a couple of smallmouth. I also caught a few redeyes and a bluegill or two. I even caught a mudfish. That is a nasty, toothy critter. The size limit on the river is 12 inches and I bet I caught at least two limits of bass. Most were over 12 inches. I think I was the only one on the river that day. Had a ball and the rain did not last too long. Most of the fish were positioned on wood but a few came out of the lily pads. The majority of my fish were in three feet of water or less. A couple of spots netted two bass. Then yesterday I fished the lake again. The wind was out of the northwest and it was a howler A-L-L day long. I found one place I could get too that provided coverage from the wind. Just like the river, most of the bass were on wood. I managed to scratch out 12 bass. I think at least seven or eight of them were keepers which is a 14 inch fish. I caught them on trick worms and Gulp worms. One I caught on a spinnerbait as I drug it along while moving from one location to another. I had to position my boat up against a stump to fish a few places in the wind. One of my worst weather days but I was proud of my catch considering what I was up against. I think it was a constant 15-20 mph with gusts over 30mph. I wish I had pictures to share but with the weather they called for I left my camera in my van.

Nice going there Carter.  If you take rain with you, come on over and I'll take you out fishing in my garden and down to the farm.  We are dry as wheat toast and the same color. ;D

BTW:  That mud fish you mentioned is that a giant bowfin or as they say down in AR a grinnell.
