My computer had gotten pretty slow and I decided to delete a bunch of stuff while waiting on Bear to go fishing.  While I was at it I got rid of my spyware program.  The computer really zipped along.

I decided to load up the AVG free program and could only find a 30 trial program.  Well I loaded it up and now my puter is slower than it was.   Any suggestions?

I got an old laptop a couple of years ago and ended up removing the operating system and reinstalled it because it had a virus. I installed Norton Antivirus and the computer did the same thing, ran slow. I tried a couple of other  protection programs and it still ran slow. I decided to uninstall all virus protection programs and have been running it naked since.

I copied the registry (when the computer was running great) so that if I got a virus I can reinstall the registry to get rid of a virus and it will restore back. I had to run the registry once and have had no problems. Worked great.

Every 2 weeks or so, I'll perform a disk clean-up and a defrag to keep it in good running condition.

OK, Jack is the answer man here but; I run AVG Free from Download.com and don’t have any time constraints. One year each subscription. Sounds like you may have downloaded their fee based product which is loaded with options. This “subscription” updates itself and I have it set to run itself a couple of times a week. Update and scan. Every once in a while I get a pop up that tells me that it has protected me from over a zillion infections. OK, I guess?
Next I run Malware bites. I run this every day (yes I’m anal)!
Next, I periodically run a Disc Scan to get rid of downloaded web pages and other offline junk. On occasion I will also remove all “cookies”. You must have a good list of your passwords before doing this but they can really fill up a memory. Cookies will allow you to logon to your sites without typing your password or they will let the site know that you are at your computer. All stuff that I really don’t understand.
Lastly I have “defrag” set to run on a weekly basis. This takes bits and pieces of scattered programs and information and puts them back together which makes the system run faster.
Again, I really don’t understand any of this, but it seems to work for me. ???
My stepson built my system for me. It’s so good that NASA called and asked if I would help launch their next rocket. ::)
I can give you his phone number. ;D

I didn't see anything free at that site.  I downloaded the 30 trial version.  It has finally gone through all of its gyrations, downloads, and scanning and seems to be resting for a while and things are better.

If I buy this thingy, will it do all the stuff you do for yourself hoppy or will I still have stuff that needs attention?

Jig Man I will see if Rachel will email me a web addy that has a free cleaner program. It's supposed to improve speed by doing some type of cleaning process. The reason I don't have it here is I just got this laptop and then suddenly started moving before I got a chance to do much with it.

I have never had the “paid” version of AVG. It does have some features (like E-Mail scan that I get for free thru my server) that some may use. If it works for you, it is a small price to pay for the security you get.
If, after it did it’s work, your computer is running better then you might have had something on there that you didn’t want.

Maleware Bites has to be updated and scanned manually. But it is a two or three click action and it is quick.

For Disk Scan in XP; (From my memory)
Start, accessories, system tools, disc scan or clean up your disc, or speed up your disk, something like that.

For Windows 7;
Start, Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, Free up Disk Space.

Defragment your hard drive is found by the same path.

Let’s be honest here Dane; If it was too complicated then we both know I couldn’t be running this stuff myself!
One last thought; I am running server speeds of around 20 Meg. That’s fast. I can run average downloads in less time than it takes me to go get a cup of coffee from the kitchen, and I have a small house!
If your still having problems PM me your phone number and I will have the stepson call you. His wedding gifts were large enough that I figure he owes me a couple of freebees! ;D

Steve, I ran the cleaner.  It deleted a bunch of stuff and seems to have helped the speed.
