weatherman was right
« on: December 01, 2011, 02:49:08 PM »
A very mild south breeze at daylight this morning shifted around to the north about 9ish. I only had to fish til 9:30 today.  I picked up a limit but I had to sort through a bunch of em to meet the 10" mark. Next time out I will be at Perry to see if I can locate some bigger fish.
The water temp this morn was 39.7.

Good going Steve.

We had a SE breeze and predicted high of 60 so I headed to Rouark Bluff on Stockton.  20 miles from there I ran into a big sign that said 39 closed bridge out.  I had to turn around go back 10 miles and cut through the country.  A 50 mile trip became 70.

I hit the water at 9:30 and had 3 keepers in 30 minutes.  By 12:30 I had 10 that didn't have to be measured.  The wind switched from SE to S and killed the bite.  I struggled for the next 3 hours and caught 6 more but only 2 were keepers.  I also had 1 keeper walleye.

They are on ice and in the morning when we get your north wind, I'll hunker up on the south side of the barn and get those things ready for the freezer.  Except the walleye which has a date with my smoker.  UUUMMM smoked walleye for lunch.

Why or how did this minor change in wind direction kill the bite?

This is an interesting question and here's why it caught my attention. In my earlier post I left out a bit of info. The weatherman said there would be 3-4 breeze out of the south and then midmorning it would shift to the west and then on around to the north. Well when I got on the water I couldn't detect any breeze and I started catching fish. Shortly after nine there began to blow a very mild breeze from the north. At the same time I started catching larger fish. I was only 3 or 4 fish from my limit so I filled it and left. I thought it was interesting that somewhat larger fish seemed to show up when the wind shifted to the north. I left em bitin as I had a limit.
