38° water = tough going
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:47:28 PM »
Only 2 ramps on the whole lake were open.  I motored from the dam to hard water in the Little Sac River.  I fished all of my regular spots no shad no bites nothing.  I worked around the Big Sac River to about hard water and fished my way back.

I couldn't find shad anywhere.  I finally went into a big marina cove and found shad suspended at 40' orve 60 fow.  I fished above them, in them and below them.  I got one bite but didn't get it hooked.

I made my way back to the launch area and decided to try the launch cove across the lake.  I sometimes catch spring walleye and sandies in it.

I found small schools of shad at various locations from 35° to 49°.  Every time I could get a bait into them and bump the bottom I would catch a fish.  Then the shad would spook and I'd have to look for another group.  I worked the area over for a couple of hours catching 2 specs and 5 eyes.  Not great but beats a skun.

Sorry to hear about the fish not biting, but as you say, better than a skunk.   :)

Good Job Jigman! That perseverance paid off. I went over to the marina at Perry today and poked around bout 3 hrs. I ended up with 2 specs as you say. I only caught one and had one given to me. There were plenty of shorts. Looks like the weather is going to go downhill  for the week are you going back out again?

Bass don't eat what they don't see.

We have a bunch of wet weather predicted for the next several days.  I think I'll wait for the water to warm up and Pommy to thaw.  All of my fish on Stockton have moved and I don't like all that driving looking for a few shad.

Nice job on getting out at least,...glad to hear that you are still that hard-core!! ;)

Here we had had a stretch of warm (40's) weather and I was beginning to actually think about trying to get out on the river (the only open water in the state..) but then the last few days have shocked me back to reality with day-temps in the 20's and single digits at night!!
Afraid I actually have another 6 weeks indoors at the minimum now!!   :shrug

If I had that much inside time, I'd go broke buying stuff to make baits that I'll never use.

I'm really not that hard core by my old standards.  My boat is in the garage and I am in the house while a guy loaded a tractor and took it to Stockton yesterday and plowed off the Hartley ramp so he could fish today.

I did one of those DA things once.  I took my Ranger boat to Table Rock and almost made it to the Cape Fair ramp when I spun out on a hill.  The weight of the boat took over and pulled me, truck, and boat back down but we did not make the corner in the road.  We went over the side down through the trees till the boat trailer hung on a tree.

Lots of moaning and groaning and BUCKS for a wrecker later I was back on dry ground heading home with a bent up boat trailer.

BTW:  Good to see you back on the net.  Someone said that you had died, so I held a week long wake for you with some of my German friends.  I think you owe me a few kegs since you didn't die after all. ;D

No Jig Man they didn’t say he died; they said he smelled that way!
After sitting around the house for all these long winter months you start to take on a certain funk.
I know this for a fact! I’m starting to smell kind of Funky myself. ::)

I know what you mean hoppy.  I heard that one of the guides at Stockton loaded a tractor on a trailer and cleaned the snow off one of the ramps.  Now if I can only get Bigfoot to take his boat.... ;D
