A different perspective
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:18:22 AM »
Well yesterday I spent the morning fishing for crappie and I had a good morning. It is definitely a more relaxed pace than bass fishing. I was using some plastics  Jig Man made and they sure did produce. I had a nice mess of fish and was back on the trailer by 10:30.

My daughter came up for the weekend  and when I got the boat stored and the fish cleaned the three of us headed up to KC for the day. She got herself a new MAC and we enjoyed some good Bar-B-Q.

Tonight after the Chiefs game........ fish fry!   ;)

Glad you had a great day on the water and I saw where the Chiefs won.

Ditto on the good day (with family too) , Get!

I imagine they are sizzling in the grease right about now!  we've still got a small pack or two in the freezer that I was eye-balling just yestiddy but I thinks we're gonna wait til Thanksgiving to fry them up for a little change up.

I'm glad the baits produced for you at this time of year.  Those are most productive in the dead of winter with the shad being bigger.

We crappie fished several times on Pom and Stockton last week.  We used the little shad body baits by B. Garland.  In order to get the best bites we had to cut them off both ends and split the tails.  Those specs wanted an itty bitty bait just slowly sinking with no twitching at all.

What a coincidence. I just stopped in BPS when I was in KC Saturday to pick up some Baileys Magnets but they didn't have any. I guess they don't carry em. Anyway I was trying to get some with solid black tube and pearl white tails. No luck so I ended up with some dark blue BPS brand   (:P)  and I also picked up some of Garland shad bodies. They didn't produce for me like the little tubes did.

I was at Perry this afternoon and caught 14 more and most of those came on the pumpkin/chartruese 2" bait you sent me. Thanks !  ;D

We are using the shad bodies but shortening them.  We cut off the head and tail and then split the tail.  Most of our fish are coming on the fall in brush.

Bigfoot and I are going to Stockton tomorrow to scan some more for productive bursh piles.  We found about 15 good ones in the Little Sac last week.  Tomorrow we are moving NW of State Park to check out our winter places.

What size jig head are you using with those modified shad bodies ? I have a fairly high frustration factor fishing with anything lighter than 1/8 oz. or more than about 15' deep. I don't keep my crappie outfits tweaked too smoothly so that is probably part of my problem.

Steve our heads vary from 1/16 to 1/2 oz.  Right now we are using 1/16 when the wind is not blowing and 1/8 when it is.  Yesterday Big Foot tried 1/4 and could not get bit.  I think it was falling too fast.

We found it tough yesterday.  Stockton had gotten rain and the river was off color.  The wind was supposed to be 6-12 but it was rocking and rolling on the main lake.  Our fish had moved out to 25' and deeper.  We only had 13 keepers with about 12 shorts.

The weather sounds like it will be several days before it is calm enough to go crappie fishing again.  So I have talked Maggy into getting out all his clothes and going sandy fishing on Friday.  (30°-42° is the predicted range with a 15 mph NW wind).

I know what you mean about fishing light weight stuff deep but I have found that counting them down gives my brain something to do while I watch the line for a twitch.  The hardest part for me is not turning the reel handle while the bait is falling.

Thankfully we do a lot of vertical fishing with the bait only a few inches off the bottom.  In those times I only have to wait for the bait to make it down once.
