Carp
« on: May 03, 2006, 02:39:48 PM »
Anyone have any idea on what these nasty things eat.  I've had some sucess on corn but more sucess on a big treble hook. :o  There are a bunch in one of the lakes I fish and I want to hook into them for some fun.

Corn meal dough balls etc. if there are mulberry trees hanging over the water anywhere they can be a gold mine, just throw one your hook and try and cast it under the tree, my most consistent is corn though, chum the area and throw a few pieces ona hook and wait, if your looking to snag them a rattle trap will do.

It's hard to find [decent working] carp these days   ;D

Seriously though, do they actually help in controlling weeds/grass?

if its not out of control like one of the ponds I fish they will.  I think MO dept conservation recommends 2-3 per acre.  The pond needs about 5-7 per acre. ::)

Special doe bait for carp./

I use to love to fish for them just for fun, but the lake I use to go too got sold for watering farm animals. Owner  died.

The smallest one I ever caught out of Big Carp lake was 11 lbs. and the biggest was 26 lbs.
all on ultra light rod and reel, with 4 lb. test.

Reciepe is Wheaties cereal with bananas, with garlic powder, and strawberries all mixed together, and wheat germ.
This is not a joke reciepe  works , I use to call it fire in the hole, because that is what it was.
Extra ingredient if you want to put it in Chicken blood. I use to make bait into doe balls marble size and put on hook then dip in chicken blood. Second best bait was whole corn put on hook one at a time till hook is full, comes off easy when you get a strike.

Bait is mixed with water and hold together well and is hard for carp to get it off.

There was a bait the farmer made he called his fire in the hole. I just copied the name.

I wish my old Big carp lake was still around I would be there all the time Carp just swim on the bottom and pull hard no jumping and flying out of the water.  Get a nice easy chair throw out and fish tight line no wieght just doe ball, , have a sandwich, and something cool to drink, and stay in the shade and relax, and shoot the breeze with friends.

I even had a bell if I fell asleep to indicate a strike.
We use to use a 50 lb. potato sack for a stringer, my friend mother would cook them up fresh with corn on the cob and french fries, she would grind up the carp bones and all and make fish patties.
We use to call them crap cakes and believe it are not as long as they were fresh and not frozen they were great.

The good old days.  I was just fishing with this friend this week at busch wild life we still get together often and we are just like two kids playing.
The memories we have made together in 55 years, we have been fishing since we were 10 years old together, our fathers never took us fishing so we adapted each other we are like brothers.

He is at Clear water lake this week wanted me to go but having health problems and doctor said stay home for a week, just left him today and he said stay home another week, I am about ready to kill him.

I'm not sure how much a 3' Carp weighs, but I have latched on to a few of them in a private lake i used to fish.  Seemed they would always bite a chrome/blue Rattletrap w/ an orange belly.

I got a bass fishing friend I started calling "Carp Man" some years ago. Seems like everytime we would fish somewhere he would catch a carp on just about any bait. One of his biggest came at night on Lake Barkley with a black and blue jig. But if I were going to fish the nasty buggers I would use either doughballs or chicken livers.  :)
