CARP
« on: December 10, 2009, 05:51:06 PM »
i,ve just read an old topic about carp posted by gman  asking what they eat. in england carp are our most popular fish(not my fav to be honest)!! they can be caught with sweetcorn, worms or any meat bait, spam being the best, the best way is to educate them by pre baiting a swim for about 2 weeks ,cut up about 2/3 tins of spam into tiny pieces and feed the same area on your lake every day or night (but dont fish it yet) then fish after a couple of weeks using my hair rig set up wich i explain in a previous post, and providing there is a decent head of carp you,ll have a great days fishing.   Do you people REALLY dislike carp as much as you make out.??  :o :o

yes they are trash fish with no value but to fertilize a garden we shoot them with bow fishing rigs in the spring and summer when the fish are spawning and they stay shallow

i think this must be a different culture thing ,a lot of anglers over here will fish for days and nights for just 1 fish(if they are lucky) and then take a photo and return the fish safely. whereas you tend to fish mainly for the table, nothing wrong with that, but we return ALL fish, NONE are eaten.carp especially are very highly regarded.I may be wrong but i think the colarado river? is full of big carp and a lot of brits head for there knowing they will catch a lot of very big fish, and they will all be returned to the water.

Blumack, I've always called them, "sewer bass". Yes I would guess the Colorado River is full of them because I have fished Lake Mead which is part of the Colorado River and the carp are so thick around the dock they make a virtual carp-et. It is because of the people throwing popcorn and other stuff out to them that they hang out there.
Gman, I remember the last time I was down to Guntersville and seeing all the boats rigged up for the big bowfishing tournament. I'll bet there were close to 200 maybe more.

THere are tons of carp around here.  Extremely thick.  I've seen some swimming around that look like submarines.  Probably 40+ pounds.  They are fun to catch and typically I just throw them back

I've always used corn for carp.  I might have to try the spam though.

hi gman,i have to say your approach to carp does seem pretty close to ours, you even put them back!!!!!!! i dont know if your aware but carp are not really native to britain they were brought into our country in the 14/15th century by the cistercian monks purely for food, they were kept and bred in ponds very near to where  the abbey was located. in fact i have an abbey within 5 minutes of me and the ponds are still there complete with the descendents of the original fish.unfortunately "NO FISHING ALLOWED" , so this begs the question "why dont you people eat them"? rather than waste them. anglers over here would give there right arm to catch fish of that size. :)

Some people here do eat them.  I dont because I dont like the taste of them. They have alot of bones also.   There are much tastier fish in our waters.

Some reason they are not sought after here in the US.   Probably because of taste.

I catch at least one carp a year here. They do fight! I let mine go as well....but a lot of people here don't.I always find a few laying on the shore or in the trash can  :-[.I know of a few guys that do eat them....but not many.

I've been trying to get a carp set up together for the past 2 years now....I just don't have the drive and motivation to get one.It seems like I'm almost always after Smallmouth bass for the most part...so i really don't have the time or desire to fish for carps just yet.

I've caught a few carp over the years but threw them back. All by happenchance on articial lures....One was on a texas rigged worm and another was on a small spinnerbait best I remember. I've heard tale you can take an institutional size can of whole kernel corn, punch several gashes in the can on all sides so the corn can escape, drop it to the desired depth 3-4 days before fishing there, go back and mop up!

I have heard of doing basically the same thing with pork'n beans to attract minnows and small fish. Hence, the food chain at work. Ive never done either one myself.  ;D

i,ve never heard of that before ,we just take the top off the tin and throw the corn in by hand concentrating the bait in a small area,if you have a lot of carp in the lake they will soon get there heads down on it, put in about 4 tins and wait about an hour then put your bait over the top of it,you should take a lot of fish, personally i much prefer to use meat (spam cut into small cubes) and a 1 inch cube of meat for bait.i,m fishing a contest (tournament) tomorrow and small carp will be the main target fish,so this is the method i,ll be using will let you know how i get on.
