CT River Stripers, 5/09
« on: May 12, 2009, 06:50:25 AM »
I'm planning to fish for these guys as much as I can through the rest of this month,..so I'll just update this post with more pics as I get them!! ;D

Got out yestarday and fished for a few hours without a bite.  Then two guys in a boat came over to me and asked to borrow pliars because one of them had a hook stuck through his finger! :o  Well he was very glad to find that I also had both a "D-barb" hook snipper as well as some Lidocaine ointment to numb it (ask your doc about an Rx for some to keep on board  ;) ).  After we got the hook out and him bandaged up,..they turned me on to a near by hot-spot where I caught 4 nice ones over the next hour or two.  Best was this one,..29" and 8-9 lbs but the others were pretty similar!   8)

Nice one!!  It's the tail end here and I still haven't gotten out yet :( :(

I am thinking of heading out this week, although I think the larger 30-40+ lbers are probably gone already >:(

J4 those are some nice ones.  I fished the CT river for stripers one fall and never could get on to any.  If I ever get back there, I may have to look up a guide. ;D

I've "heard" that they make a smaller run in the fall,..but I've never caught one in the river at that time of year either!!
Primetime for them (in the river here) is almost always the middle of May when they follow the alewife's upriver,... and the baitfish migration happens when the water temp hits about 55 and is just about completely overwith when it gets to 70.  Before and after that,...the stripers will be found mainly out in the salt! 8)

OMG,..What a day I had!!
Since we're getting towards the end of striper season on the river here,..I decided to take an afternoon off and hit it one more time!   Launched in the lower river and fished the mouth for about an hour, picking up a couple of schoolies (about 20") before deciding to make the trek upriver to my favorite spot.
Started fishing there and picked up one small striper and two bluefish pretty quickly before latching onto a "monsta"......turned out to be a real beauty at 36" but when I went to take a pic,..the camera batteries took that moment to die on me!!  :tick

I always carry some spares,..but this beast was just too large to get into my livewell even with the divider removed,..plus it was pretty well spent by the time I could get her into the boat into the first place,..so with some mixed feelings I put it back into the water and moved it back and forth for a few moments before it could gather the strength to swim off!  :-[

Well, I put some fresh batteries in the camera and got it all set up figuring that I was probably jinxing myself,..but what the heck!   Anyway over the next couple of hours I proceeded to just hammer them!   Totals on the day were 1 broken rod,..several shredded lures and  13 stripers with 6 of them topping 30"!!   :banana :banana :banana
Actually, I'm sure I could've stayed longer and kept catching more,..but I was just getting physically exhausted!   Some pictures are kinda lousy because I was tired and I was trying to get the fish back in the water ASAP, since most could not swim off under their own power until I moved them around in the water for awhile!  Anyway,..here you go!  The last pic was my SECOND 36-incher!! ;D

Went back again yestarday after work with my buddy from work who has never had much luck,..so my main goal was just to put him onto a fish or two.  Long story short,..it wasn't quite as good as the day before but we did end up with 8 between us,... 4 of them were keepers between 28 & 32".  Here's my buddy Mike with his two best!  The smile says it all! ;)

Got out a few times over the weekend to wrap up the month,...first pic is my son's friend who is a very inexperienced fisherman.  He was not expecting something to pull that hard and he really had his hands full trying to get it to the boat as my son & I were hooting & hollering!!  Wish I would've thought to video the fight,..it was pretty funny watching the struggle!! ;D
2nd pic was my last fish of the month,..right around 34 inches and somewhere in the 15-20lb range! 8)
